Tom Cox announced that our
LeRoy Interact Club has scheduled
a Honor Flight fundraiser for 8 am
on February 5th.
Our speaker today was Dr.
Bruce Baker and he presented
Medicine in the Modern Era.
Doc t o r Bake r ha s been a
cornerstone in the community
since he first came here in the
early 1960’s, in addition to a
private practice (and making
house calls) he has served the
Town of LeRoy and Genesee
County in a long list of posts.
Our own Dr. Bruce has taken an
interest in the history of medicine.
He began with the dawn of
modern medicine at 1900 with
The Flexner reports. Flexner
was interested in standardizing
practices among American
Medical schools, at which time
he found them to be often sorely
lacking in standardized scientific
curriculum. By looking to use
great institutions as the model
of what a modern medical
education should be, the overall
standard of American Medicine
was elevated rapidly. Flexner
revised his ideas in 1915 to
address more socio-humanistic
concerns as well. This was the
standard model until 1980 when
a newer paradigm called the bio-
psycho-social model was gaining
traction in American medicine.
Dr. Baker explained that he
felt one of the most significant
differences between 1st world
nations (United States etc.) and
developing nations was access to
clean water and sanitation. Bruce
also outlined where he thought
the U.S. should head in the future
with better provider to patient
communication and greater focus
on lifestyle and health. Thanks
Dr. Baker for a thought provoking
and interesting presentation.
