Streams
Trees are often recognized for
their impact onairquality. How-
ever, trees are also extremely
important for water quality and
fish habitat. When trees grow
along streams, they help pre-
vent streambank erosion, filter
pollutants out of runoff, support
stream ecosystems, and reduce
stream temperatures, which is
good for fish. With all of these
benefits, youmight expect to see
lots of trees and shrubs growing
along streams. Unfortunately,
many sections of our streams
completely lack treesandshrubs,
and have grassy lawns and farm
fields extending to the edge of
the streambank.
Replanting streamsides with
trees just got easier. New York
Trees for Tribs has expand-
ed to the Genesee River Basin.
Through this program, proper-
ty owners are given free native
trees and shrubs to plant along
streams on their properties. The
goal is to plant 15,000 trees/
shrubs in 2016! Plantings will
be focused on 4 areas within the
Genesee River Basin, including
the Oatka Creek watershed, the
Upper Black Creek watershed,
the Honeoye Creek watershed
and the main stem of the Gen-
esee River from Mt. Morris to
Scottsville.
While winter has just arrived,
it is already time to start
planning for spring-time tree
plantings, and Genesee River
Basin Trees for Tribs is looking
for participants. The property
must have a stream, but can be
residential, agricultural, munic-
ipal, commercial or even indus-
trial. Property owners can find
out if they are eligible by con-
tacting the Trees for Tribs Coor-
dinator or calling their County’s
Soil and Water Conservation
District. The program also seeks
volunteers tohelpplant the trees.
