LeRoy Pennysaver & News
LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - OCTOBER 7, 2018 LeRotary Notes On Wednesday, September 26, with unsettled weather, twenty-five members of the Rotary Club of LeRoy gathered at the Greens of LeRoy for their weekly meeting. President Jim Ellison called the meeting to order. After the Pledge of Alliance and the prayer led by Bob Carlson, the members recited the four-way test. Three guests were introduced: Jocelyn Sikorski, Executive Director of Genesee County Youth Services; Jessa Decant, Music Department LeRoy Central School and Gary Churchill, Rotarian from Batavia (who is now considered an adjunct LeRoy member.) Announcements, and there were many, included: Thirsty Thursday this week at the Creekside at 5:30; October 13: Storage cleanup and Tony Gugino needs a few more volunteers; and later that day, Marcia McKenzie reminded everyone to sign up for Game Night at 7 PM for cards and social get-together. Bob Bennett reminded everyone of the Appliance Raffle coming up on October 28 and he will have a sign up next week. Anil Sawhney mentioned that the Eastern Cities Dinner at the Rochester Riverside Convention is the same day as the Appliance Raffle, but if folks work the earlier shift, they would be able to attend the dinner. The Rotary International President, Barry Rassin of the Bahamas will be the keynote speaker and all new Rotary members are invited to a special reception. He will also be attending the Rotary District Conference at Niagara on the Lake on October 20. Anil also mentioned that this is the time of the year that Rotarians make their donations to the Rotary Foundation through a program known as Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY). Donations can be made online or checks made out to the Rotary Foundation can be given to Anil or David Grayson. All members are encouraged to support EREY. Continuing with announcements, Bob Bennett reported on the family picnic at his house and thanked everyone for participating. A good time was had by all. Christine Gephart reported on this past Tuesday’s Community Supper at the Masonic Hall on Bank Street. They served 119 dinners and they could really use some more volunteers. Everyone must be certified in civil rights training. Contact Christine for the next certification training. Christine also thanked everyone who helped at 6:30 am to set up the concession stand last Saturday for the LeRoy Cross Country Invitational. The Rotaract and Interact students manned the concession stand all day with the help of more than 10 Rotarians. They also set up Alex’s Lemonade Stand to raise money for pediatric cancer. The weather didn’t cooperate, and sales were down. A donation envelope was passed around to Rotarians at the meeting. Sam Vagg gave a report on the Interact and Rotaract clubs at school and talked about various projects they will be doing this year. Lynne Belluscio mentioned that John Kucko of Channel 13 was in LeRoy today and will be posting photos of the Jell-O Gallery and LeRoy’s Barn Quilts on his WNY Weekend adventure series. President Ellison was pleased to present a check to Jocelyn Sikorski of Genesee County Youth Services. She told the club about a very popular program that they have initiated called Halloween Costume Kits which provides students from kindergarten to 5th grade with everything they need to go out trick or treating on Halloween. Last year, students from the Batavia High School assembled 225 kits on the school’s Day of Caring. The kits were distributed through the schools. Jessa Decant from the music department at LeRoy Central School accepted a check on behalf of RAMP – Rotary Assistance for Music Programs. The money will provide software tor 150 band members to enhance the programs already offered through “Smart Music.” For missed meetings: Betsey Halvorsen, Merrit Holly, Jake Whiting, Bob Bennett and Amber Dobson used a variety of excuses. Some excuses were accepted, and some had to pay with the usual green card. There were several fines this week. David Grayson was expected to answer trivia questions about printing. He sort of answered the questions but still had to pay a fine. Anil Sawhney was asked how long the average person actually spends brushing their teeth. He got it right: 60 seconds but he missed the question about how many yards of dental floss is bought per year per person - - 18 yards - - who knew? Betsey Halvorsen was asked about a photo of her with a Norwegian Viking beard, and the answer was a little convoluted, so of course she paid. Phil Plossl was shown a photo of a piece of construction equipment and was asked about its” impact” on the construction business. Phil admitted to having four of the machines and of course paid dearly for sharing that information And last but certainly not least, Bob Bennett was asked about a chair “distribution” at the corner of South Street and Route 5 and it had something to do with a tail gate being down. Reportedly, three Rotarians waved at him as they went by. Bob still had to pay of course. Finally, Bob Boyce called on the services of Past President David Grayson to level fines at the President for not enforcing the rule to wear name tags. President Jim paid a fine to cover those Rotarians who did not have their badges on. The rest of the meeting was taken up with committee meetings.
