LeRoy Pennysaver & News

LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - JANUARY 20, 2019 It was a lovely crisp day as the meeting was called to order by Past President, Randy Vink. We welcomed LeRoy High School seniors Stephany Samis, Ava Horgan, Robert Locke, and Scott Kiester. Announcements were kicked off with announcement of the Big Game TV Raffle. Tickets are on sale now at $5 each or 3/$10. The drawing will take place on February 2nd. Rotary Leadership Institute is scheduled for March 23rd. The LeRoy Rotary Interact club will be hosting the Alumni Basketball Game on March 27th. The Graze to Raise is scheduled for May 17th. The REA Milne Scholarship has received additional funding this year and will be able to support additional scholarships. ALL LeRoy High School seniors are encouraged to apply. There were many missed meetings this week. Tammy Arneth, Christine Gephart, Jason Karcher, Marcia McKenzie, Phil Plossl, David Grayson, Ron Pangrazio and Samantha Vagg all had make- ups. Martha Bailey, Tony Gugino, Tom McGinnis, and Scott McCumiskey dipped into their wallets for a green card. Lynne Belluscio was the first to be fined for her invisible tape facebook humor. Jake Whiting was called upon for a beautiful picture of he and wife Lauren taken while they were in Syracuse for a game at the Carrier Dome. Jake was thrilled to announce the Orange “crushed” Tony Gugino’s alma mater St. Bonaventure. Past President Randy switched things up a bit and had Martha Bailey and Bob Carlsen split Jake’s fine. Marcia McKenzie, Tammy Arneth, Christine Gephart, and Betsy Halverson all paid fines for either wearing gray sweaters or sitting under the chandelier. Martha Bailey paid a few happy dollars to announce the arrival of her fifth grandchild. Christine Gephart gave an informative program on the LeRoy Rotary Community Kitchen and its partnership with Foodlink, the LeRoy Food Pantry and Tops Friendly Market. Foodlink is a community food resource center and the Feeding America food bank serving Allegany, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wayne, Wyoming, and Yates counties. By orchestrating a complex systemof food recovery, storage, and distribution, Foodlink is doing something very simple - helping to feed our neighbors. Food insecurity refers to USDA’s measure of lack of access, at times, to enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members and limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate foods. Food-insecure households are not necessarily food insecure all the time. Food insecurity may reflect a household’s need to make trade-offs between important basic needs, such as housing or medical bills, and purchasing nutritionally adequate foods. In Foodlink’s 10-county service area, the overall food-insecurity rate for Foodlink’s 10-county service area is 11.7%. The child food- insecurity rate is 18.3%. More than 147,420 people, including nearly 50,000 children, in our region are considered food insecure. Foodlink receives the bulk of its food from Wegmans. Foodlink also hires underemployed workers to sort the food as it comes in. Wegmans donated the building on West Avenue to Foodlink in 1988, allowing for expansion of warehouse capabilities. The largest Foodlink pick- up order to date for the LeRoy Rotary Community Kitchen is 800 pounds. The kitchen has served 21 meals with over 8,000 pounds of food distributed. The approximate cost to the kitchen is $1.30 per person. This includes a hot meal and a take- home bag with enough staples to prepare two meals at home. Tops and The LeRoy Food Pantry also support the kitchen by providing additional foods to donate and serve. The LeRoy Rotary Community Kitchen is community collaboration.
