LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - FEBRUARY 24, 2019 There were three “guests” from the Batavia club present today: former LeRoy Rotarian Marlon Salmon and his wife Donna as well as pseudo LeRoy Rotarian Gary Churchill. Dr. and Mrs. Salmon kicked (or danced) off the announcements by telling the group about the Batavia Clubs Centennial Celebration that will include a Speak-easy fundraiser at Go-Art in Batavia on March 30th. Tickets are $30/ person. President Jim Ellison reminded the group about the upcoming Easter Egg Hunt that will be held on April 21st. Past President Sam Vagg spoke about the Alumni Basketball game that benefits our youth programs. This year’s format will be changed slightly as it will feature the cross-town rivalry with Cal-Mum, definitely not an event to miss! Upcoming Service opportunities include the Rotary Community Kitchen that runs every other Tuesday at the Masonic Temple. March 29th and April 26th are career days at LCS, volunteers are needed to speak to the students. The club wrapped up a successful service opportunity at the Hope Center this past Saturday. The group painted two rooms at the center and followed it up with a social gathering at Capish. Don’t forget the Last Friday of the Month Breakfast with Bob which is an excellent opportunity to make up for a missed meeting. Missed meetings are a plenty this week, as Dr. Bruce Baker, Bob Boyce, Ben Deragon, Christine Gephart, Betsy Halvorsen, Erik Fix, Merritt Holly and Marsha McKenzie all had to explain why they were absent and either provide proof of a make-up or pay with a green card. President Jim is making good headway with his 2019 budget as fines were a plenty and all resulted in a $5 fee. Bob Boyce admitted to the fact that he became engaged to his wonderful wife 57 years ago on Valentine’s Day. Ben Deragon was given a tin cup from last year’s LeRoy Historical Society dinner which proved to be a blatant plug by the President to announce this year’s dinner date. Mary Margaret Ripley has a new job, Bob Sullivan was seen in an old picture and Christine Gephart has the largest bunny ever seen. David Grayson was given a “dinner MTO” coupon, Marsha McKenzie was given a participation trophy for our work on the Grants Committee and Ron Pangrazio was given the opportunity to discuss his Duke Basketball team’s come from behind win. Finally, Merritt Holly was fined for not singing about the past weeks snow day, something everyone else was thankful for. The program consisted of Betsy Halvorsen giving her birthday speech which lasted about 2 minutes. In that time, we learned that she one time caught two fish on one hook at the same time, can solve a Rubik’s cube and say the alphabet backwards faster than most people can say it forwards. Because Betsy (short for Elisabeth with an “s”) was so quick, President Jim spent the remaining time discussing the District’s desire to incorporate. There were many questions asked and some remain unanswered until we hear back from the district. A vote will take place at the February 20th meeting.
