LeRoy Pennysaver & News

LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - APRIL 14, 2019 by Lynne Belluscio Have you ever wondered what the huge walk-in safe at the Jell-O Office on North Street looks like? Where all the formulas and contracts were kept? Or for that mat- ter have you ever been in that building? Or have you been curious about the reception room of the 1928 Woodward Airport that was open when Amelia Earhart visited in 1929? And wondered what the Friendship really looked like when Amelia Earhart flew in it across the Atlan- tic? Maybe you’ve been at Mercygrove for a reception or a meeting, but have you ever been in the basement to see the working parts of the Aeolean organ that is worth nearly half a million dollars? What if you had a chance to go inside the Woodward Mausoleum to see the beau- tiful stained glass window? Add all of that plus a leisur- ly ride up and down Main Street to learn where the Woodward Medicine Com- pany was located, or where the Main Street fires were, or hear the story of the post office, and all along the trip, gather clues to a great puzzle that will result in a basket of unique LeRoy treasures awarded to the winners. Join me and 20 other people for a private tour of LeRoy on Saturday, May 4. Meet me at the LeRoyan at Mercygrove for a wonderful breakfast buffet at 8:30 and a tour of Donald Woodward’s mansion on the hill. Leave your car at Mercygrove and climb on our minibus and then it’s on to a day of explo- ration and fun. A quick stop at a flea market at April’s Finds just across the street from Mercygrove. A lunch stop at the D&R Depot and a railroad story. While tak- ing a closer look at Main Street and trying to solve the puzzle, you can stop at the Divine Tree for a tasting of her unique food special- ties. At 5:30 we will gath- er at Farmer’s Creekside to hear the story of this unique building that once was a hat factory, a doctor’s office, and home of Percy Hooker, the first New York State Com- missioner of Highways. A wonderful dinner is sched- uled at 6pm. Please contact the His- torical Society for additional information or to make a res- ervation. 585-768-7433 or historicalleroy@gmail.com. The cost of the day-long event, including the won- derful food, is $122 per per- son. You do not have to be a member of the Historical So- ciety to join us. I guarantee you’ll have a good time!
