Tigers 1 Orioles 0 The second to last Saturday of the regular season would get off to an exciting start with the Tigers and the O’s battling out a 1-0 game. For those that enjoy quality pitching and great defense, this game didn’t disappoint. Although the first 5 innings of this game were scoreless, it was not without drama and excitement. After a scoreless top of the first by the Tigers, the O’s would threaten early. With two outs, Luke Lathan and Jayce Jedrewski would reach on back to back singles. When Brady McClurg reached after being hit by a pitch, the O’s had bases loaded and two out. However, Alex Spezzano would end the threat with his second strike out of the inning. Both teams were quiet in the second inning as it became apparent that pitchers Luke Lathan and Alex Spezzano had their best stuff on this Saturday morning. In the top of the third inning the Tigers would threaten for the first time. One out singles by Alex Spezzano and Xavien Walker and a two out single by Zander Staba would load the bases for the Tigers. However, just like his foe, Luke Lathan ended the threat with a K, his 7th strike out through the first 3 innings. Both teams went one, two, three in the 4th as both pitchers continued to pound the strike zone and both defenses continued to make plays. After Luke Lathan make quick work of the Tigers in the top of the 5th inning, the Orioles looked, once again, ready to break the 0-0 tie. Cam Maxwell led off with a walk and T. J. Crissy followed with a single. This set up runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs and the top of the O’s order coming up. Chase Cummings would reach first base on a fielder’s choice however a nice play by Elijah Iten at third forced Maxwell out. Still, with runners on 1st and 2nd and the heart of the O’s order up, the Tigers were not out of trouble yet. Brayden Chase ripped a line drive towards first base that would have been a hit in most cases. However Zander Staba, taking advantage of his height, reached up and snatched the ball and made a heads up throw to 2nd base for an inning ending double play. On to the 6th inning, score still tied 0-0. Luke Lathan, with his 9th strike out of the day, would retire the 1st batter of the inning. This set up Zander Staba with 1 out and no one on. After falling behind 1-2 in the count, Staba would lace a ball into the right field corner for a triple. Then, in a piece of heads up base running, Staba would come home to score on a ball in the dirt despite a great attempt by the O’s catcher. After a walk to Elijah Iten, Lathan would settle back down to record his 10th strikeout and followed that by inducing a ground ball that just stayed fair, to retire the side. With a 1-0 lead and the 3, 4, 5 hitters coming up for the O’s, Alex Spezzano would need to get 3 outs to secure the win. After inducing a ground ball back to himself for our number one, Spezzano would proceed to strike out the final two hitters for his 8th and 9th strike outs of the game and a complete game 1-0 shutout for the Tigers.
