LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - JUNE 23, 2019 LeRoy Little League Results Yankees 4 Twins 2 In the first game of the Scanlan Cup Playoffs the 3 seed Yankees took on the 6th seeded Twins. Starting on the mound for the Yankees Jake Higgins would strike out 3 batters in the first inning. Grant Gilligan got the start on the mound for the Twins. Yankees lead off hitter Jake Higgins laid down a perfect bunt and one pitch later stole second base. Higgins would steal 3rd base two pitches later. Jude Sherman drew a walk and both Higgins and Sherman would score on a Wyatt Draper 2 RBI single to left center field. Matt Covert recorded an RBI single to score Draper but would be left on base. After 1 the Yankees 3, Twins 0. Jude Sherman would take over the pitching duties in the second striking out 1 batter and holding the Twins scoreless in the inning. For the Yankees, Jake Higgins doubled and then stole 3rd base but would be left stranded. Grady Gilligan would strike out two Yankees batters in the bottom half of the inning to keep the Yankees off the board. The Twins would get on the board in the third after DJ O’Geen hit a laser to right field for an inside the park home run. Jude Sherman would strike out two batters in the inning to keep the score at 3-1 in favor of the Yankees. In the bottom of the third inning Jude Sherman lead off with a double but was left on base. In the top of the 4th the Twins Jack Egeling pounded the ball to right center field for a double. Egeling was then scored on a Liam Grayson RBI single. Grayson would be left on base but the Twins picked up a run in the inning to put the score at 3-2. In the 4th Grady Gilligan would return to the mound for the Twins and behind some very good defense get out of the inning in 3 straight pitches. Jude Sherman would again strike out 2 batters in the 5th to keep the Twins off the scoreboard. In the bottom of the 5th Jake Higgins would lead off by hitting a ball to the fence in center field for his second double of the day. Jake would then score on a Wyatt Draper sacrifice ground out RBI. Cam Riggi would add a hit for the Yankees but was left on base. The Yankees defense would shut down the Twins in the bottom of the 6 to lock in the 4-2 win. Pitching for the Yankees Jake Higgins went one inning with 3 strikeouts and 2 walks. Jude Sherman went 4 innings striking out 6 with no walks and only allowing 5 hits. For the Twins Grady Gilligan went 5 innings striking out 5 batters with 1 walk and giving up 7 hits. Hitting for the Yankees Jake Higgins was 3-3 with 2 doubles, scored 2 runs, and stole 3 bases. Jude Sherman was 1 for 2 with walk and a double. Wyatt Draper was 1 for 3 with 3 RBIs. Cam Riggi and Matt Covert also added singles for the Yankees. Hitting for the Twins DJ O’Geen was 2 for 3 with a home run, Jack Egeling was 1 for 3 with a double and one run scored. Holden Sullivan and Liam Grayson added singles for the Twins. The Yankees will now take on the second-place Orioles in the semifinal playoff round. Red Sox 13 Indians 5 The Red Sox and Indians squared off in the 4 vs. 5 seed playoff game onWednesday night. Adam Woodworth started on the hill for the home Indians. In the top of the 1st the Sox picked up 1 run from hits by Hayven Cordes and Landen Stoddard. In the bottom of 1 Stoddard took to the mound for the visiting Sox. The Indians answered back scoring 2 runs from hits by Woodworth, Austin Bogue, and Cam Wilson. Both teams failed to score in the 2nd. In the top of 3 the Sox scored 3 more runs from hits by Isaac Stella, Peter Clark, Alex Stephany, and Cole Tonzi. The Indians would respond again picking up 1 run in their half with hits by Jagger smith, and Wilson. After 3 Red Sox 4 Indians 3. In the top of the 4th the Sox added 2 more runs off 3 consecutive hits by Cordes, Stella, and Stoddard. Once again the Indians would respond with 2 runs with walks to Noah Kacz, and Smith. Woodworth and Bogue each had big hits in the 4th. In the top of the 5th Logan Kanaley drew a walk and then the Sox would keep their bats hot with hits by Cordes, Stella, Stoddard, Tonzi, and Vernacini. The Sox tacked on 5 runs. In the bottom of 5 the Indians failed to score. The Sox added 2 runs in the 6th and then played solid defense to shut down the fighting Indians to end the game. Pitching for the Sox was Stoddard going 3 2/3 and Alex Stephany finishing the game going 2 1/3. Hitting for the Sox was Cordes with 4 hits 2 RBI’s, Stella and Stoddard both with 3 hits 3 RBIs, Stephany and Tonzi 2 hits 1 rbi, and peter Clark and Joey Vernacini both with 1 hit 1 RBI. Pitching for the Indians was Woodworth going 4 1/3, Bogue and Macconnel pitched in relief. Hitting for the Indians were Woodworth 3 hits, Bogue and Wilson 2 hits, 2 RBI’s, Noah Kacz, Jagger Smith, and Deacon Queal each with a hit. Red Sox 3 Tigers 1 The visiting Red Sox took on the Tigers in the Saturday morning playoff game with the winner going to the Scanlan cup finals. Alex Spezzano started on the bump for the Tigers. In the top of the 1st the Sox scored 1 run with consecutive hits from Isaac Stella, Landen Stoddard, andAlex Stephany. Stephany headed to the hill for the Sox in the bottom of the 1st. The Tigers threatened but left 2 runners on after hits from Spezzano and X-man. In the 2nd neither team would score due to excellent pitching and defense from both squads. In the 3rd the Sox added 2 runs from hits by Stella, Stoddard, and Stephany. In the bottom of the 3rd the Tigers would load the bases but the Sox would escape without allowing any runs. In the bottom of the 5th the tigers would threaten again loading the bases with hits from X-man, Jacob Iten, Zander Staba, and Avante Walker. The Tigers picked up 1 run from an Evan Rose walk. The Sox failed to score in the top of 6. The Tigers left 1 runner on in the bottom as the Sox would hold off the charging Tigers to earn a spot in the finals. Pitching for the Sox were Alex Stephany going 4 2/3 with 6 strikeouts, and Stella going 1 1/3 with 3 strikeouts. Hitting for the Sox were Stoddard with 3 hits 1 RBI, Stella with 2 hits, Stephany 1 hit 2 RBI’s, Clark and Vernacini each with a hit. Pitching for the Tigers were Spezzano going 4 1/3 with 10 strikeouts and X-man going 1 2/3 with 5 strikeouts. Hitting for the Tigers were X-man with 4 hits, Spezzano with 2 hits, Jacob Iten andAvante walker each with a hit. Yankees 2 Orioles 0 In the semi-final, round of the Scanlan Cup playoff game the 3rd ranked Yankees riding a 6 game winning streak took on the 2nd ranked Orioles. Pitchers Luke Lathan for the Orioles and Wyatt Draper for the Yankees would dominate the opposing teams’ batters in this game striking out a combined 21 batters while only allowing 4 hits and no earned runs. Both teams would be held without a hit through 3 and a half innings. In the bottom of the 4th Luke Lathan hit a monster shot down the third base line for a double. Lathan however would be left on base in the inning. In the top of the fifth the Yankees would get their only 2 hits of the game off Lathan. Connor Elmore hit a single to center field, follow by a Matt Covert single. An attempted steal by Elmore would result in an error leading to both Elmore and Covert crossing home plate to put the Yankees up 2-0. In the bottom of the sixth the Orioles would make it interesting. Yankees pitcher Wyatt Draper would walk 2 batters and strike out 2. With 2 outs and runners at first and second Brady McClurg would single to load the bases. Draper now at his pitch limit would battle back to strike out the final Orioles batter, getting his third strikeout of the inning to secure the win for the Yankees. With the win the Yankees now advance to the Scanlan Cup Finals vs the Red Sox. Pitching for the Yankees Wyatt Draper faced 24 batters striking out 12, allowing only 2 hits and no runs. For the Orioles, Luke Lathan faced 21 batters striking out 9, allowing only 2 hits and no earned runs.
