Yankees 3 Red Sox 2 On Saturday the best of 3 Scanlan Cup Championship se- ries got under way as the home team Yankees took on the visit- ing Red Sox. The Yankees came into the game riding a 7 game win streak including knocking off the second seeded Orioles in the semi-final game. The Red Sox advanced to the Scanlan Cup Championship Series af- ter taking down the first seeded Tigers. For the Yankees Jake Higgins would get the start on the mound. In the top of the first inning Landen Stoddard would double for the Red Sox but was left on base. Landen Stoddard took on the pitching duties for the Red Sox. The Yankees were able to manufac- ture a run in the first after Jude Sherman was hit by a pitch, stole second and then scored on con- secutive past balls. In the top of the second for the Red Sox, Cole Tonzi would safely reach base and advance to second on a past ball. Joey Vernaccini then hit a deep fly ball to center field where the Yankees Matty “Ice” Covert made the catch. The sac- rifice fly would score Tonzi to tie the game at 1. Yankees pitcher Jake Higgins would strike out 2 batters to close out the inning. Stoddard and the Red Sox de- fense would hold the Yankees scoreless in the bottom half of the inning. In the top of the third Higgins would strike out 3 bat- ters to keep the Red Sox off the board. In the bottom of 3 Stod- dard would walk 2 batters and strike out 2. With runners at sec- ond and third and two outs, Red Sox catcher Isaac Stella made an incredible diving catch on a foul ball to close out the inning. After 3 the game remained tied at 1-1. In the top of the 4th the Yankees defense would hold the Red Sox scoreless. In the bot- tom half of the inning the Yan- kees Wyatt Draper hit a hard line drive to left field and would later be scored on an Anthony Warner RBI single to put the Yankees up 2-1. They Red Sox would an- swer back in the fifth after Cole Tonzi hit a ball to left field for a single. Tonzi would score in the inning on a Colin Greene RBI single to tie the game at 2. In the bottom half of the fifth Cam Riggi would steal first after a dropped third strike. Jude Sher- man then hit a laser right center field for a double. With 2 outs and runners at second and third, Connor Elmore would come up with the game winning RBI sin- gle to score Riggi. The Red Sox would force a pop out to the next batter to get out of the inning. In the top of the sixth the Red Sox would make it interesting after Hayven Cordes reached first on a dropped third strike. Isaac Stella would then single to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Jake Higgins would then strike out the next two Red Sox batters and reach his pitch limit. The Yankees brought in closer Jude Sherman who forced a pop out to Yankees center fielder Matty “Ice” Covert for his third big catch of the day. Pitching for the Yankees Jake Higgins went 5 and 2/3 innings giving up 3 hits and striking out 11 batters while walking only 2. Red Sox pitcher Landen Stod- dard pitched 5 innings giving up 3 hits and striking out 7 batters while walking only 2. Yankees 10 Red Sox 5 The Yankees entered the sec- ond game of the Scanlan Cup Championship series vs the Red Sox up 1 game to 0. The Red Sox would started Isaac Stella on the mound in game 2. In the first inning Yankees lead-off hit- ter Jake Higgins would lay down a perfect bunt. Higgins would then steal second and third. Jude Sherman and Wyatt Draper would each draw walks. Connor Elmore would come up big with runners in scoring position and hit a 2 RBI single to score Hig- gins and Sherman. Jayce Pane- pento would later hit a line drive to right center for an RBI single to score Draper, putting the Yan- kees up 3-0. For the Yankees Connor Elmore would get the start on the mound. Elmore and the Yankees defense behind a Matty “Ice” Covert catch in cen- ter field would hold the Red Sox scoreless in the first. In the top of the second the Red Sox would return the favor keeping the Yan- kees off the board. In the bot- tom of the second Alex Stephany would hit a hard line drive to left field. Yankees outfielder Evan McCallister would make a nice play on the ball to hold Stepha- ny to a single. Joey Vernaccini followed with a single. Logan Kanaley then drew a walk to load the bases. With the bases loaded and 2 outs the Yankees brought in pitcher Jude Sherman. Sherman would force a pop up to the next batter and Yankees first baseman Jayce Panepento would secure the catch to keep the Red Sox off of the score board. In the top of the third Jude Sherman would single, followed by a Wy- att Draper Double. Jayce Pane- pento would again come up big again for the Yankees hitting a 2 RBI line drive double to score Sherman and Draper. Petyon Privatera would then lay down a bunt and after an overthrow to first the lightening fast Privat- era would end up at third scor- ing Panepento. The Red Sox would answer back in the third after Landon Stoddard singled and was then scored on a Peter Clark line drive RBI double. Af- ter 3 complete innings Yankees 6 Red Sox 1. In the forth Jake Higgins would single and score a run on a Jude Sherman sacri- fice RBI to right field. The Yan- kees defense would hold the Red Sox scoreless in the fourth. In the top of the fifth the Red Sox would return the favor keeping the Yankees off the board. In the bottom half of the inning the Red Sox would get things going. Peter Clark would hit a ball to right center field. Yankees out- fielder Anthony Warner fielded the ball cleanly to limit Clark to a single. Alex Stephany would follow Clark with a single of his own. Cole Tonzi would then single to drive in Clark, and Joey Vernaccini would single to bring in Stephany to make the score 7-3 after 5 complete innings. In the top of the sixth Jake Higgins would safely reach 1st base ad- vance on a passed ball to second, and then steal 3rd. Cam Riggi then singled. Jude Sherman would then hit a 2 RBI single to score Higgins and Riggi. Sher- man would score later in the inning to put the game at 10- 3. In the bottom of the 6th the Red Sox would not go quietly. Hayven Cordes got things going with a triple. Isaac Stella then reached base safely. Landon Stoddard singled to score Cordes and Stella. Simon Green would then make a nice catch in left field for the second out of the inning. Cam Riggi then fielded a hard hit ground ball to third and made a perfect throw to the outstretched glove of Yankees first basemen Jayce “Bobcat” Panepento to seal the Scanlan Cup Championship for the Yan- kees. Final score Yankees 10 Red Sox 5. The Yankees would end the season 12 and 8 with a 9 game winning streak. A lot of hard work, dedication, belief and a little luck from “Gizzard the Lizard” helped the Yankees go from tied for last place to the 2019 Scanlan Cup Champions.
