LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - JULY 7, 2019 Le Roy Central School District Letter To: Le Roy Central School District Students, Parents, and Community: With the decaying health of the English Copper Beech tree located between the Wolcott Street School and Woodward Memorial Library and the safety risk it posed, a collective decision was made to take down the tree on Monday, July 1st. There is a limited number of days in the calendar each year in which our campus is accessible and not bustling from student and community activity. With our Wolcott Street School Summer Academy running from July 15th to August 8th, Oatka Festival slated for July 13th and 14th, the window of opportunity to complete this project became very limited. The English Copper Beech (“The Library Tree”) will surely be missed by our school and community. Depending on the ability to gather any quality wood, we do have plans to make a commemorative bench and table. Lastly, I think it is only fitting and appropriate to leave you with a poem in honor of the tree written by the former Woodward Memorial Library director, the late Gerald Halligan: THE CHILDREN'S TREE How many young minds have grown and branched on the limb of the Curly Beech? How many lives deemed successful were greened in this tree of life? Climbing legs twist to hug the skyward limb and find a strength before unknown. An arm level branch is the entrance to a hidden world just made for youth. A cave of green with magnified peep-holes on the outer world, the real world, as counter to the tree world of innocent dreams. Perhaps the bark of the self-made man is the reflection of a soft velvet leaf from the magnificent Curly Beech. By Gerald J. Halligan 1931 - 2008 Merritt Holly Superintendent of Schools Town & Country Garden Club of LeRoy The annual Town & Country Garden Club Plant Auction was held on May 29th. The door prize for the evening was an Amish Cart won by Brenda Heineman. Monies raised by this event are for civic beautification. SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL ADVERTISERS!
