LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - JULY 21, 2019 LeRoy 11U All-Stars District 3 Champions! LeRoy 12 Batavia 0 (6/28/19 – 4 innings) The LeRoy 11 year old all-star team met Batavia in the first game of a double elimination district 3 tournament. Grady Gilligan got the start on the mound for LeRoy with Karissa Vendel toeing the rubber for Batavia. LeRoy kicked off the scoring in a big way right out of the gate in the top of the first inning. LeRoy would load the bases after a walks to Brayden Chase and Grady Gilligan and a single by Hayven Cordes. Jace Jedrewski would then hit a 2 run single scoring Chase and Cordes. Jagger Smith would then reach base on an error allowing Gilligan to score. Cole Tonzi would plate Jedrewski on a fielder’s choice and Jagger Smith would then come around to score when a ball was misplayed off the bat of Liam Grayson. Tonzi would then score on a passed ball and Grayson would score on a single by Brayden Chase. Hayven Cordes would then single plating Chase. The next batter would fly out making the score 8-0 after the top half of the first inning. LeRoy would add to their lead in the next 2 innings. In the 2nd inning, Jace Jedrewski led off with a double and came around to score on a single by Jagger Smith. Smith would then later score on a single by Liam Grayson. In the third inning, Grady Gilligan would lead off with a single and score on a double by Jedrewski. Jedrewski would then score on a RBI ground out by Jagger Smith ending LeRoy’s scoring at 12 runs. As good as Leroy’s bats were in this one, the pitching of Grady Gilligan was not to be outdone. Gilligan would go the distance in this 4 inning mercy rule game and record a no hitter, striking out 7. Gilligan would walk one batter and hit one batter but those were the only base runners for Batavia. Offensively, LeRoy was led by Jace Jedrewski with 3 hits (two 2B), 3 runs scored and 3 RBI’s. Brayden Chase and Hayven Cordes both added 2 hits and an RBI. Jagger Smith had a hit, 2 RBI’s and 2 runs scored while Grady Gilligan and Liam Grayson also added hits. LeRoy 10 Batavia 0 (7/2/19 – 5 innings) Batavia and Leroy would meet for the second game of a three game series with Batavia looking to send the series to a third game. Grady Gilligan once again started on the mound for LeRoy with Isaac Varland taking the hill for Batavia. Ryan Bigsby led off the game with a single for Batavia in the top of the first but Grady Gilligan would settle down and retire the next three Batavia hitters. In the bottom half of the first, LeRoy would get on the board first after a triple by Hayven Cordes and a RBI single by Gilligan. Leroy would then load the bases after singles by Jace Jedrewski and Peter Clark but Isaac Varland and the Batavia defense would work out of a jam to keep the game at 1-0. The score would remain unchanged until the bottom of the 3rd inning when Leroy would increase their lead. Hayven Cordes again would get things going with a lead-off single. Cordes would later come around to score on a RBI double down the left field line off the bat of Jace Jedrewski. The Peter Clark would come to the plate and blast a RBI single scoring Jedrewski increasing the LeRoy lead to 3-0. In the top of the 4th inning Batavia would threaten after a double by Gavin White and a walk to Brayden Lazarny but Gilligan and the Leroy defense would work out of the jam including an amazing throw out at home from right fielder Aiden Weaver. In the bottom of the 4th, Leroy would take command of the game. Aiden Weaver and Liam Grayson would get things started with singles. Brayden Chase would then come through with a clutch 2 RBI single scoring Connor Elmore (who had pinch run for Weaver) and Grayson. Chase would then be caught stealing but Hayven Cordes and Grady Gilligan would then both single and Jace Jedrewski would single scoring Cordes. Peter Clark would then blast a double scoring Gilligan and Jedrewski. Clark would then later come around to score on a fly out by Jagger Smith. In the 5th inning, Leroy would add 1 more run to enforce the mercy rule after Aiden Weaver led off with a hustle double and came around to score of a RBI single by Brayden Chase earning Leroy the District 3 Championship. On the mound, Grady Gilligan was once again outstanding scattering 5 hits over 5 innings and striking out 5 batters without allowing a run. Offensively, Leroy had four hitters that each recorded 3 hits (Brayden Chase, Hayven Cordes, Jace Jedrewski and Peter Clark. Chase added 3 RBI’s while Jedrewski and Clark both added 2 RBI’s. Aiden Weaver added 2 hits and Liam Grayson also added a hit. For Batavia, Ryan Bigsby and Gavin White each had 2 hits while Nicole Doeringer added a hit. Sectionals: Game 1 (7/11/19): Penfield 6 LeRoy 0 Game 2 (7/12/19): LeRoy 15 Wellsville 0 Game 3 (7/14/19): Penfield 8 Leroy 0 LeRoy would meet Penfield in the first game of the sectional tournament and Penfield would use strong pitching and defense to hold LeRoy’s offense scoreless in this one to come away with the victory. LeRoy was only able to manage 3 singles in this contest coming off the bats of Hayven Cordes, Jace Jedrewski and Jagger Smith. For LeRoy, Grady Gilligan pitched well striking out 4 and allowing 6 runs (2 earned). In game two of sectionals, Leroy would meet Wellsville needing a win to advance to the Championship game. Jace Jewdreski drew the start on the mound for Leroy. In this game, Leroy’s bats would awaken. In the bottom of the first inning, Hayven Cordes would single but was put out at second after a fielder’s choice off the bat of Grady Gilligan. Jace Jewdreski would them single and Peter Clark would then walk to load the bases. Jagger Smith would then step to the plate and blast a two out triple to right center field that would clear the bases scoring Gilligan, Jedrewski and Clark. Smith would then score himself on a passed ball giving Leroy a 4-0 advantage after one. In the second inning, Leroy would blow the game open scoring 8 runs to take a commanding 12-0 lead. The big blows in this inning would be doubles by Hayven Cordes, Jace Jedrewski, and Cole Tonzi. Leroy would add 3 more runs in the bottom of the third inning to enforce the 15 run mercy rule. Defensively, Jace Jedrewski and Jagger Smith handled the pitching duties and they combined to hold Wellsville scoreless, allowing only 2 hits and striking out 3. Offensively for Leroy, Hayven Cordes had 2 hits while Jace Jedrewski had 2 hits, 2 RBI’s and 2 runs scored. Jagger Smith had a triple, 2 bases on balls, 3 RBI’s and 3 runs scored. Peter Clark also had a hit, 2 bases on balls and 3 runs scored. Also adding hits for Leroy were Brayden Chase, Liam Grayson, and Cole Tonzi. Leroy’s win against Wellsville put them in the Championship game against Penfield. Jace Jedreski got the start for Leroy and the game was scoreless for the first 2 innings. However, Penfield scored 5 runs in the third inning which was all they would need in this game as Penfield pitcher Henry Schutts struck out 13 Leroy batters and would allow only one hit on the game which was a triple off the bat of Cole Tonzi. The game would end at 8-0 and put a finish to Leroy's post-season run. The members of Leroy’s 11U all-star team were Brayden Chase, Hayven Cordes, Grady Gilligan, Jace Jedrewski, Peter Clark, Jagger Smith, Cole Tonzi, Liam Grayson, Cam Wilson, Cam Riggi, Connor Elmore, Aiden Weaver and Joey Vernaccini. The team was managed by Travis Smith with assistant coaches Jon Wilson, Jay Elmore and Luke Weaver.
