LeRoy Pennysaver & News

LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - JULY 21, 2019 by Lynne Belluscio I thought I’d put a little different twist on our kids’ summer programs. As I was putting the classes together, I thought, maybe there is a theme here. What if we paired the activity with lunch? If the kids come to make cheese bas- kets, then they can order grilled cheese sandwiches or macaro- ni and cheese from Mooneys’. And if they make lunch bas- kets, we show them how to pack their lunch “the old fash- ioned way” with wax paper. Forget about plastic. This is how we did it in the old days. Then I thought, let’s have a picnic at the steam shovel. The kids can learn how it operated, and maybe we can all pose for pictures like they did a hun- dred years ago. And the Depot will send over a “quarryman’s lunch.” Two other lunch ideas that we will offer is lunch at the Woodward mansion (Mer- cygrove) . I’ll give the kids a tour of the house and then we’ll have lunch in the dining room. (White tablecloth, and napkins. Chicken noodle soup with instruction on how to use a soup spoon. Sandwiches (with the crusts cut off) And of course Jell-O for dessert, with proper manners on how to pass the whipped cream. But the one lunch that I am look- ing forward to is the “Eat Your Way Down Main Street – a six course lunch, beginning at Mc- Donalds for hamburgers – and the story of what was there be- fore McDonalds. Then pizza at Capish – and the story of the bank, followed by a little spa- ghetti at LB Grand and a story about the “South Side” and the weather flag and the Buffalo Foundry buildings. It’s French fries at the Diner which is the old Odd Fellows Hall, and on to the Eagle for wings - - and that’s a very historic build- ing. And finally, dessert at the Creekside and a talk about the mill pond, Ingham University, Ballard’s hat factory and Percy Hooker. We’ve put together a couple other classes and they all include lunch from one of the local restaurants. So take a look and talk with your kids and give us a call if they want to join us. It should be deli- cious - - as well as historical. Students must have com- pleted 3rd grade. Classes are limited to 10 students. All classes $8. Registration is only confirmed when paid.
