Bart Dambra led the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer was offered by Bob Carlsen. Two guests joined us for the day. Mary Margaret Ripley was joined by her son Douglas and Jim Luckman of NY Pork Producers joined us as the guest speaker. President Mary jumped right into announcements after the introduction of guests. Three Milne Scholarship recipients wrote lovely thank you cards, which were read aloud. It was announced that Jim Ellison will be holding his evening meeting on Wednesday, August 7 at 5:00 pm at the Hope Center. Bob Bennett reminded everyone the Rotary Picnic will be held at his house on September 15 and a sign-up sheet will be going around soon. Mary Margaret Ripley invited everyone to come to the First Baptist Church garage sale Friday, August 2 from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm and Saturday, August 3 from 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. Christine Gephart reminded everyone that the Community Kitchen hosts dinners every second and fourth Tuesday and announced that training is much easier now so to spread the word to those who might be interested in volunteering. She also announced a Stone Soup event coming up in October. For $15 participants will get a bowl, hand-crafted by a LeRoy CSD student, and the chance to try soups from area restaurants. No birthdays were celebrated so President Mary continued right into missed meetings. Christine Gephart, Betsy Halvorsen, and Mike Tucci missed meetings that were covered by make-ups. Jerry McCullough missed a meeting. Carol Wolfe may or may not have missed a meeting. President Mary sped along with her agenda and fined Jeff Holiday for receiving his official Rotary name tag. David Grayson was fined for having his grandson help him wash his car. Phil Plossel was fined for eating eight hot dogs in one day twenty years ago. Mary Margaret turned a profit on a piece of china she picked up cheap at a garage sale but it ended up costing her a fine. It was suggested that Betsy Halvorsen has been busing people to the library in an S & S limo bus but paid a fine for hosting a Touch a Truck program in June which featured one of the vehicles from the S & S fleet. Bart Dambra’s granddaughter is studying to be a nurse and expertly cared for a fellow Rotarian recently. Bart is proud of his granddaughter but it cost him a fine. With everyone’s pockets emptied, President Mary introduced guest speaker Jim Luckman, Barker School District Administrator and President of the NY Pork Producers. Jim also owns a farm and raises show pigs. His program was all about sustainable farming and facts about pigs and pork. Using sustainable farming practices of mixing traditional and new methods pig farmers are aiming to use less land, water, and energy in hopes of promoting a better environment for the future. Pig farmers have already reduced land use (for feed) by 75% since 1960 and water use by 25%. Humans would have to take 90 fewer showers per year to create the same amount of reduction in water use. Pigs are leaner and healthier today than pigs of the past. Combining better barns, better nutrition (swine nutritionists exist!), enhanced genetics, and better bio-security, pigs are leaner and healthier than their ancestors. Some interesting pig facts Jim shared: ● A pig is full-grown for slaughter at 6 months. They go from 3-5 lbs at birth to 270 lbs in 6 months. ● A sow is pregnant for 3 months, 3 weeks, and 3 days. The average litter size is 8-12 piglets. ● Pork tenderloin is as lean as a skinless chicken breast. ● 3 oz of pork tenderloin has 22 grams of protein and 3 oz of pork loin has 24 grams of protein. ● Pork is safe to eat as long as it’s cooked to 145 degrees Fahrenheit, which is medium- rare.
