LeRoy Pennysaver & News

LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - AUGUST 11, 2019 by Lynne Belluscio A Visit with Marion the Steam Shovel - Wednesday, August 21 10:00 am. Our spe- cial guest is Chris Rueby, who has built a working model of the Marion 100-ton Model 91. He is bringing the model to Le- Roy to take some photos of the model and it’s bigger “sister” on Gulf Road. This is no ordi- nary model. It is four-foot long. Weighs over 100 pounds, and eventually will operate on coal. Chris recently sent me a mes- sage saying that the model is completed. It’s taken him two years to machine all the parts and assemble them. The first component that he built was the dipper bucket. He was able to secure the original drawings of the working parts of the patent- ed release levers on the bottom of the bucket. He brought the bucket and the dipper arm to the Historical Society annual meet- ing in 2018. Since that time, he has built the crawler tracks, the boiler and all the chain driven wheels. It is pretty amazing. Chris agreed to bring the model on the day that we are offering a picnic at the shovel for our kids’ summer program. So, he will explain how the shovel works - where the four engines are and what they do. I will bring copies of the photographs we have in our files. Anyone can come over at 10 to see Chris, his model, and ask questions. If you want to stay for the picnic, call 768-7433. The cost is $8.
