Senator Ranzenhofer's Monthly Column Affordability Remains a Top Priority New York State continues to rank at the bottom of study after study as one of the most expensive states in which to live. Any Western New York resident is well aware of how expensive it is to raise a family or run a business in New York State. Making New York State more affordable continues to be one of my top priorities. That is why I sponsored legislation to cap property taxes for seniors (S4579) and to make child care more affordable (S4458). I continue to hear from seniors regarding the constant struggle with fixed incomes, lack of increases in Social Security and growing property taxes. They are being forced to sell their homes and move to states that are friendlier for retirees and those on fixed incomes. My bill, if passed, will help seniors to be able to stay in their homes. Childcare is another topic that I hear about very often. The cost of childcare in New York State is astronomical and it continues to be a growing burden on many Western New York families. It is becoming a necessary part of raising children, especially in today’s economy when many, if not most, households rely on two incomes. With my bill (S4458), the existing cap on childcare expenses would be doubled. Most families would receive an estimated new average credit of $750. Based on this, families in New York State would save an additional $230 million in 2020. While I realize there are many financial burdens that New Yorkers face, I am hopeful that the 2020 Legislative Session will offer some solutions to these burdens.
