Happy 50th! Submitted by Ric Vangalio CELTICS VS BULLS The much anticipated first game of the inaugural Le Roy 1st and 2nd grade Boys Basketball League featured a showdown between the Celtics and the Bulls. The Celtics got off to a hot start behind the sharp shooting of Ryker “Greek Freak” Vangalio and the impressive ball handling and shooting of Brody “Professor” Wilson. The Bulls played great basketball in the first half but just weren’t getting the rolls. Andrew Sibley got them on the board first and was followed up shortly by Carter McClurg putting one in the hoop as well. Jackson Hubbard provided some muscle down low for the Bulls on defense and Logan Corcimiglia was giving his man fits on the outside. Cam Weber was a monster on the boards for the Bulls as well. With the help of Joey Wujcik cleaning up the glass with some big rebounds and some shut down defense by Gunner Humphrey and Ben Cashin the Celtics went into the half up 26- 4. The Bulls refused to give up and came back strong in the 2nd half and began mounting a comeback. Cole Cray (also known as Cray-Cray) got into the scoring action while Dominic DeJesus, Aiden Weise and Kipton Cone stepped up with some strong defense for the Bulls. But when Robert Humphrey, Quinton Ianni and Weston Humphrey found their shots for the Celtics, along with Zack Pocock providing some solid defense the lead proved to be enough to hold on for the victory. The final score was Celtics 36- Bulls 16. Ryker Vangalio led the Celtics with 14 points, followed by 8 points for Brody Wilson, 6 for Robert Humphrey while both Quinton Ianni and Weston Humphrey poured in 4 points each. The Bulls were led by Andrew Sibley with 8 points, followed by Carter McClurg with 6 points and Cole Cray with 2 points. The Celtics play the Lakers next while the Bulls square off against the Knicks. LAKERS VS KNICKS The second game of the night matched the Lakers vs the Knicks. This game started off much like the first with the Lakers getting a hot start right out of the gate. There should have been an APB out for Blake “Sweet Tea” Biracree as he was picking the Knicks pockets with multiple steals that led to fast break points. Sammy “Little Kobe” Bogue added to the scoring fest which included the league’s first and only 3-pointer from beyond the arc. The Lakers’ Ben “Benny Buckets” Biracree was wheeling and dealing with multiple assists and John Amico was a force to be reckoned with on the defensive boards. Dylan Loftus showed off his soft shooting touch as well contributing to the Lakers offense from outside the paint. The Knicks fought hard with Lucas Miller starting off the scoring before Preston Heschke joined the party. Landon “Kacz” Kacznowski was running the show and making some amazing passes from the point guard position to set up Thomas “Tommy Guns” Englerth and Connor Hanley who took some great shots but just couldn’t get anything to fall as the rims were not kind for the Knicks to start the game. The Lakers took a 21-6 lead going into the 2nd half. Harrison Porter and Owen Nichols provided a spark on offense and found the bottom of the net for the Knicks in the 2nd half who were also helped out on defense by Eli “Skull” Fortuna. Killian Connolly also provided some quality minutes for the Knicks as well as they tried to catch the Lakers in the 2nd half. But in the end the Lakers proved to be too tough with scoring from Wyatt “Whip” Whipple and Blake Fetzer and some stifling defense from Graham Pawlak. Despite some late scoring by the Bulls’ Nate Conte, the Lakers took the game with a final score of 35- 13. The Lakers were led by Blake Biracree with 16 points and Sammy Bogue with 11 points. Also contributing were Dylan Loftus with 2 points, and Blake Fetzer, Wyatt Whipple and Nathan Conte with 2 points each. The Knicks were led by Preston Heschke with 5 points and Lucas Miller with 4 points. Harrison Porter and Owen Nichols rounded out the scoring with 2 points a piece. The Lakers next face the Celtics while the Knicks get ready to play the Bulls. Boys Basketball Recaps
