Includes lunch, tours & Information Sessions The 2020 Legislative Session is officially in full swing. Between committee meetings and session, much has been happening in Albany. New laws passed last year have now gone into effect. I raised serious concerns with many of the bills and priorities that were being rushed through the legislature. We are now seeing the consequences of those measures that were hastily passed. Some of my biggest concerns were in regard to the 2019 Cashless Bail Laws. In fact, many of the serious flaws now being discussed regarding cashless bail were raised months ago, including before, during, and after debate of the bail changes. It has been estimated that approximately 90% of all crimes are no longer eligible for bail. On an almost daily basis, Western New Yorkers have been inundated with new stories about accused criminals being released without bail who return to their criminal ways with alarming quickness. This is an immediate threat to our public safety. The refusal to consider an accused’s danger to the victim or to the community or to allow judges to use their discretion are critical shortcomings that need to be addressed. In the utmost interest of public safety, it is the duty of the New York Legislature to repeal the current bail reforms. The consequences of the Green Light Law are also plaguing the residents of Western New York. This month, the Federal government announced that it would no longer process NEXUS applications for New Yorkers. While this is extremely disappointing, it is not a surprise. While debating this bill on the Senate floor in the 2019 Session, I raised many concerns with provisions of New York State’s Green Light Law, which includes language to restrict the federal government from accessing DMV records. It was known that this would happen and the bill was passed anyway. Just last week, the failure of this bill was highlighted by the region’s top law enforcement official when he stated that this law puts our national security, border officials and the public at significant risk. With Western New Yorkers traveling to Canada for work, vacation and even visiting family, the impact will be greatly felt.
