You never know from one day to the next what it will be. That is the position that we are in waiting while for direction from Albany and those directions change from one day to the next. So as I write this on Tuesday some of the things may change by the time you read this. I have had some questions about the pool since the Governor has said that public pools may reopen. According to the regulations from the state, public pools may only have 10 people in or around the pool area at a given time. Those waiting to get into the pool would have to maintain social distancing protocols as well. At this point the staff would then have to engage in cleaning protocols before the next group entered. Additionally, there was no guidance provided as to the status of locker rooms or bathrooms. Furthermore, we are under a 50% mandated work force until at least July 6th, and the hiring of lifeguards would require us to lay off some of our full time employees. The same limitations would apply to swimming lessons. At this time I know of no public pool openings and the Town Board has no plans to open the pool this summer. This week the Governor announced that day camps can open. I have checked with the Geneses County Health Department and the state does not recognize recreation programs as day camps. That would mean that recreation programs, at best, would be able to open sometime in July with no guidance as to what they would look like. Again the Town Board has no plans to run the recreation program this summer. With the less then stellar news aside, it appears that we will be moving into Phase 3 by Friday of this week and I encourage everyone to go out and support our local restaurants (at 50% capacity) and tip generously. The Town Hall will be open starting on Monday, July 15th. Anyone entering the building will be required to wear a face mask and observe the social distancing protocols that will be laid out. We will still encourage people to call ahead and make an appointment whenever possible. At this time we have no date when the courts will open. You can however now call the town hall and leave a message for the court. Just a quick financial disclosure. The Town of LeRoy, after reviewing the budget and taking into consideration the revocation of the sales tax agreement by the county, the budget is approximately $800,000 short for the year 2020. Even though we can cover the loss of revenue, it will be devastating to our reserve fund and also require us to make some very difficult decisions for 2021 both in services and taxes. The Governor is presently sitting on 4 billion dollars in aid from the federal government that he has not released. Contact the Governor through his website and demand the release of funds. If and when a stimulus 4 comes out there will be money earmarked for local governments. Finally I would like to congratulate the class of 2020. I hope as we move forward you are able to have the graduation ceremony you deserve. You will always be able to say that you were a senior during the pandemic of 2020.
