July Session full of Missed Opportunities Although 2020 has been very challenging for everyone, I continue to be amazed at the resiliency and compassion of our community. I want to thank all our first line workers. While there has been nonstop discussion surrounding the pandemic, we must remember to take time to appreciate all those who have put at risk their own health and safety to help others. T h e L e g i s l a t u r e recently convened for a rare July session and while there was plenty of opportunity to help our struggling state, sadly it fell short. I have heard from many constituents who have numerous and pressing concerns. School reopenings, nursing home deaths and aid for struggling businesses are just a few of the topics I speak about with residents daily. Incredibly, none of these topics were addressed during the recent Session and failure to deal with these pressing issues is a disservice to our community. Our State and local economy has taken a huge hit that will be felt for years to come. But, this is not a new issue. New York has long been known for its unfriendly business climate and extreme outmigration. The budget deficit the state is now facing has been a common theme for years. In fact, in my 2020 legislative questionnaire, over 51% of respondents said the state should address deficits by reducing spending and cutting outdated regulations. While all of this has forced businesses and residents to reevaluate what is best for them, our state fails to do that. On the other hand, only 28% of residents advocated for tax increases or cost shifts. Residents, especially right now, cannot afford to continue to foot the bill for these unfunded mandates and regulations. New York State government must prioritize. We need to ensure the quickest, most sustainable, economic recovery possible. New York State residents deserve that.
