LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - AUGUST 30, 2020 Week 5 Indians 11, Tigers 5 The second place Indians and first place Tigers met for the second time this season with the Indians looking to even up the season series in each team’s final regular season game. Peyton Privitera got the call for the Indians, making his first little league start, with Peter Clark getting the nod for the Tigers. The Tigers jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first after Jack Currin and Liam Grayson singled and were hit home on a double by Jude Christ. However, two outstanding catches in center field by Jagger Smith helped to limit the damage and keep the score 2-0. In the bottom of the first, the Indians would get on the board after Tommy Clifford walked and both Jagger Smith and Hayven Cordes were hit by pitches to load the bases. Jeremiah Sheehan then hit a ball that was misplayed allowing Clifford to score. However, Peter Clark would settle in to strike out the next two batters to end the rally with the score 2-1 after the first inning. In the top of the 2nd, the Tigers would add to their lead after Andreas Condidorio singled, Alex Spezzano walked and Peter Clark blasted a 2 run double scoring Condidorio and Spezzano to increase the Tigers lead to 4-1. In the bottom of the 2nd, the Indians would answer back. Ryan O’Geen started the rally with a walk and singles by Tommy Clifford and Jagger Smith loaded the bases. Hayven Cordes then blasted a double that would clear the bases evening the score 4-4 after 2. In the 3rd inning, the Indians would move in front. Eddie Lathan started things off getting hit by a pitch and Ryan O’Geen singled. Tommy Clifford then hit a single scoring Lathan and O’Geen and Jagger Smith had an RBI single scoring Clifford to give the Indians a 7-4 lead after 3. In the 4th inning, the Tigers would add a run after Alex Spezzano laced a triple and scored on a single by Jack Currin. However, some excellent pitching from Hayven Cordes would hold the Tigers offense in check and keep the score 7-5. In the bottom of the 4th, the Indians added a run after Cordes doubled and scored on a single by Peyton Privitera making the score 8-5 after 4. In the 5th inning, the Indians would increase their lead after Liam Ortiz walked and singles by Tommy Clifford and Jagger Smith loaded the bases. Jace Jedrewski then hit a single scoring Ortiz, Clifford scored on a passed ball and Smith scored on a throwing error to make the score 11-5 which would be the final score. For the Indians (8-3), Hayven Cordes got the win on the mound scattering 3 hits over 3 innings and striking out 7. Peyton Privitera (2 IP, 3 K’s) and Jagger Smith (1 IP, 1K) also contributed with their arms. Offensively, Tommy Clifford (4 runs scored, 2 RBI’s) and Jagger Smith (2 runs scored, 1 RBI) both had 3 hits. Hayven Cordes added 2 doubles with 3 RBI’s and Peyton Privitera added 2 hits with an RBI. Ryan O’Geen, Jack Clifford and Jace Jedrewski (1 RBI) also added hits. For the Tigers (9-2), Peter Clark (4K’s), Liam Grayson and Jack Currin (1K) handled the pitching duties. Currin led the Tigers with 3 hits while Peter Clark added 2 hits and 2 RBI’s. Jude Christ had a double and 2 RBI’s while Alex Spezzano added a triple. Liam Grayson and Andreas Condidorio also added hits for the Tigers. Red Sox 10, Yankees 7 The Red Sox and Yankees faced each other Tuesday night in the last regular season game of the year. Starting pitching for the Red Sox was Jojo Vernacini. In the first the Yanks scored 2 from a Colin Greene single and a couple of walks. The Red Sox scored 3 in the bottom. The Yankees added one more in the 2nd and the Sox failed to score in their half. In the third the Yankees went down 1,2,3. The Sox would add 1 more in the bottom from a Joey Vernacini double that scored Evan Rose. In the 4th the Yankees scored 3 with hits by Nate Pangrazio, Connor Elmore, and Anthony Warner. In the bottom of 4 the Red Sox added 4 runs from hits by Isaac Stella, Evan Rose, Joey Vernacini, Joey Reschke, and Evan Mcallister. The Yankees scored 1 in the 5th while the Red Sox added on 2. In the 6th Evan Mcallister would make an outstanding 3rd out catch in right field to end the game Sox 10 Yanks 7. Scanlan Cup Playoffs Red Sox 10, Twins 6 The playoffs started August 20th with the 6 seeded twins taking on the 3 seed Red Sox in the 4:00 matchup with the winner moving on to Friday and the losers season ending. Noah Kacz got the start for the twins while Joey Vernacini would throw for the Red Sox. In the top of the first the Twins started hot scoring 3 runs with big hits by Noah Kacz, Kade Olivani and Brayden Chase. In the bottom of 1 the Sox would answer scoring 5 runs. The Twins failed to score in the 2nd. The Sox added 5 more in their half. That would be all the scoring for the Red Sox as Avante walker would come in to pitch for the twins going 4 innings with 10 strikeouts and only allowing 1 hit. The Twins scored 2 in the 4th and 1 in the 5th. Final score Red Sox 10 twins 6. Hitting for the Red Sox were Isaac Stella, Cole Tonzi, Evan Rose, Joey Reschke, Joey Vernacini, Evan Mcallister, and Ethan Rose. Hitting for the Twins were Noah Kazcanowski, Kade Olivani, Avante Walker, Brayden Chase, Mathew McCulley, Daniel Winters, and Colin Kazmierzak. Pitching for the Red Sox was a Joey Vernacini, Evan Rose, Cole Tonzi, Joey Reschke combo. Pitching for the Twins were Noah Kacz and Avante Walker. Yankees 5, Orioles 2 The defending Scanlon Cup Champion Yankees began the playoff defense of their title with an exciting, 5-2 upset victory over the Orioles. Connor Elmore, Cam Riggi, and Colin Greene combined on a great pitching effort that held the powerful Orioles to just 2 runs. The trio was backed by solid all around defensive plays by the Yankees led by Donovan Gaillard, Drew Beachel, and Nate Pangrazio. The offense was once again led by the powerful trio of Elmore, Greene, and Anthony Warner. Greene recorded 2 hits and a run, Elmore drove in a run with a triple, and Warner was 3 for 3 on the day with a double, triple, and 2 RBI. Gaillard added a hit and 2 stolen bases for the Yanks. For the O’s Grady Gilligan did a fine job on the mound recording 10 strikeouts. Offensively Cam Wilson had 2 hits, Gilligan and Simon Greene each had a double, and Deacon Queal added a hit for the Orioles. Scanlan Cup Semifinals Tigers 15, Yankees 4 Game One of the Scanlan Cup Semi-finals featured the Yankees and Tigers. The Tigers scored first with two runs in the bottom of 1st inning. Following a 1 out walk by Jack Currin and single by Peter Clark, Liam Grayson would reach on a fielder’s choice (Clark out at second). Liam would steal second base putting two runs in scoring position. Jude Christ worked the count full on seven pitches ultimately driving the eight pitch of his at bat to right center field for a 2 RBI, 2 out double. Tigers 2, Yankees 0 The score would stay the same until the bottom of the 3rd inning. Peter Clark led off with a single and scored on a 2 out RBI single by Carter Page. Tigers 3, Yankees 0 The Tigers would open the game up in the 4th inning scoring 5 runs while bringing eleven batters to the plate without recording a hit. Walks by Andreas Condidorio (2), Jack Currin, Carter Page and Thomas Crissy. Alex Spezzano, Nick Porcelli and Liam Grayson all reached after being hit by pitches. Spezzano, Currin, Clark, Grayson and Condidorio all crossed home plate making the score Tigers 8, Yankees 0 The Yankees would score their first run in the 5th inning when Cameron Riggi reached on a dropped third strike and made his way around the bases on passed balls. The Tigers put the game away in the bottom of the 5th inning scoring another 7 runs. Recording RBI’s in the inning were Jack Currin (2), Peter Clark (2), Liam Grayson, Andreas Condidorio and Alex Spezzano. The Yankees, showing their grit and lack of quit, scored 3 runs in their final at bat on singles by Colin Greene, Connor Elmore and Drew Beachel. Greene, Elmore and Aidan Weaver scored the three runs. Final Score, Tigers 15, Yankees 4. Alex Spezzano earned the win for the Tigers with 5 1/3 innings on the mound.
