LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - NOVEMBER 22, 2020 LeRotary Notes The Rotary Club of LeRoy held its weekly meeting on November 11, 2020, at the LeRoy Country Club with 16 members in-person and 6 members joining virtually. The club has been doing a great job providing both in- person and virtual options for members in the midst of the pandemic. This helps members fulfill their meeting requirements and avoid missed meeting fines. President Mary Margaret Ripley brought the meeting to order. Randy Vink led us in the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a wonderful prayer by Bob Carlsen which focused on all the men and women who have serviced in the military. Bob Boyce introduced his guest, Mr. JustinM. Johnston, Genesee Community College Vice President of Development and External Affairs. President Mary Margaret asked for announcements. Shannon Karcher announced the community is signing up for the Holiday Decorating Contest. Families can sign up online: https://forms.gle/ DD9JiyAL15ZwGLWw5. She also announced the bleachers have been installed at Wildwood Park. This was able to be completed because of a grant the club was awarded. Shannon discussed how over the past two grant seasons the club has been able to put new floors in the pool locker rooms and the addition of the bleachers all at Wildwood Park. ScottabMcCumiskey announced he has handed out most of the Appliance Raffle Tickets to members. There are a few members who have not picked up their tickets and need to get in touch with Scott. The event will be streamed through Facebook Live on December 6, 2020. Randy Vink reminded the club about Every Rotarian Every Year. Anyone who has questions can speak with Jim Ellison. Carol Wolfe announced the box for the food donations for the LeRoy Food Pantry will be at the LeRoy Country Club. Christine Gephart announced the LeRoy Rotary Community Kitchen is back to the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month. The LRCK has witnessed an increase in the need for meals within our community. Phil Plossl and Mary Young both had one missed meeting but had a make-up for working the Spaghetti Dinner on Election night. President Mary Margaret thanked them for their assistance. Randy Vink announced birthdays for the month of November. Members present at today’s meetings with November birthdays were Jim Bonacquisti, Tony Gugino and Bob Boyce. President Mary Margaret also took a minute to recognize the veterans in the club. This included Randy Vink, Bob Boyce, Bob “Sully” Sullivan, Bob Carlson and Jim Ellison. We thanked them for their service to our country. President Mary Margaret began the fining session. Jim Bonacquisti was fined for 37 years of marriage to his lovely wife. Gerry Aron was fined for attending his niece’s wedding over the weekend. He said it was a very small event but wonderful. Bob Carlson was fined for Derrick Monument supplying the monuments and benches at Trigon Park. Jake Whiting was fined because his mom helped him sell his Appliance Raffle Tickets. We appreciate Jackie going above and beyond and selling to help make the fundraiser a success. President Mary Margaret also brought out a copy of the LeRoy Gazette from 1970. The article stated that Bob Boyce’s wife, Beth, was part of the “Newcomers Club.” This club helped welcome new people to the LeRoy community. Scott McCumiskey offered to pay Bob’s fine. Jason Karcher called on the service of Past President, Carol Wolfe. Jason was concerned that President Mary Margaret didn’t know which district she was in for voting on election day. Not to worry the poll workers helped her and Mr. Ripley located their district, but she was fined by Past President Carol Wolfe for $10.00 because of the confusion. Justin Johnston, Vice President for Development & External Affairs at GCC spoke to the club about the Genesee Community College Foundation. Over the past ten years, the foundation has awarded over 1.5 million dollars in scholarships. He also spoke about the scholarship sponsored by the Rotary Club of LeRoy for a senior each year. Justin spoke to the challenges around COVID-19 and how GCC has adapted to make sure access to learning is still available for all students. GCC has been working with students to have some in- person learning but assists in eliminating barriers for students who are learning remotely. He also spoke about how COVID-19 testing has been occurring for students on campus. The final part of the presentation was about Encore. Encore is GCC’s signature holiday community engagement and fundraising event. It is being Co-Chaired by Tom and Kim Cox. Kim was a former member of the LeRoy Club and past Superintendent of LeRoy Central Schools. Encore is in its 29th year and has raised significant funds in support of student scholarships. Encore has been generously supported by the community and business leaders who are committed to our students and the future of GCC. For more information go to: https://gccfoundationinc. org/.
