LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - MAY 16, 2021 by Lynne Belluscio It seems like there’s a lot happening in May. The month is remembered with the Lily of the Valley and the emerald. I should have written this earlier, because I missed May 1, May Day. Does anyone remember having a Maypole and weaving the ribbons over and under? May first is also National Beer Pong Day - maybe that’s what replaced the maypole dancing? And of course, May 4th is “Star Wars Day” - “May the Fourth Be With You.” And I missed May 10, “National Clean Up Your Room Day”. Guess I’ll have to wait until next year to clean my room. And May 11 is “Eat Anything You Want Day” followed by “National Limerick Day” on May 12. I was surprised to learn that May 13 is “National Apple Pie Day.” I would have thought it would have been in October, when the apples are ripe, but May 13 is also “National Crouton Day” and “National Frog Jumping Day.” I don’t know if that means that you jump over a frog, or that you get together with your friends and see whose frog jumps the furthest. Here are some other dates you can put on your calendar: May Calendar Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 Also, don’t forget to stop by the Woodward Memorial Library in May to see the exhibit about Justus Miles Forman, the author from LeRoy. I’m also declaring May, “Plant Your Keeney Bean Seeds Day in LeRoy.” As most of you know, Calvin Keeney of LeRoy developed the stringless bean (as opposed to the string bean). One of his best beans, was the Yellow Pencil Pod variety, which is sold by Burpee. We have a good supply of beans and would be more than glad to make sure you have some for your garden. Bean seeds are available at the Jell-O Museum and you can pick some up at the BBQ on Trigon on May 23. “Dance Like A Chicken Day” I don’t know whether this is a national day or not. “National BBQ Day” and “National Mimosa Day” (Do they go together?) "National Pick Strawberries Day" and "National Quiche Lorraine Day" and "National Rescue Dog Day" First Chicken BBQ of the season for the Historical Society. Trigon Park 11 AM – Menu includes 1/2 chicken; salt potatoes; cold slaw; roll &butter; chocolate chip cookies. $12 (No presale tickets.) It’s also “National Turtle Day” International Museum Day (The Jell-O Museum is usually closed on Tuesdays, but if you stop by on May 18, we’ll let you in free.) It is also “National Visit Your Relatives Day” so bring your relatives and we’ll let them in for free too. “National Brown Bag It Day” I guess you’ll have to hide your wine in a paper bag, because it’s “National Wine Day” For those who want to put on your tap shoes, it’s also “National Tap Dance Day.” “National Scavenger Hunt Day” and I guess you’ll need to look for snails because it’s also “National Escargot Day”. It’s also “Victoria Day” for those in Canada – We’ll miss you again this year with the border closed. It’s also “National Asparagus Day.” “National Armed Forces Day” and “National Whiskey Day” and “National Chocolate Chip Day” Here in LeRoy the American Legion is holding its Chicken BBQ “National Vanilla Pudding Day” - If you visit the Jell-O Museum, we’ll give you a free box of Jell-O Vanilla Pudding. It’s also “National Buy a Musical Instrument Day.” (Sorry, no musical instruments for sale at the Jell-O Gallery.) Volunteers gather at Macpelah Cemetery to place flags on gravesites. It’s also “National Paper Clip Day” Income Tax Day and “National Walnut Day” Genesee County United Way Day of Caring - - Teams are assigned to a variety of places throughout the county and will provide volunteer help. In LeRoy, one team will help at Machpelah Cemetery. “National Blueberry Cheesecake Day” and “National Paper Airplane Day.” “National Grape Popsicle Day” and “Cellophane Tape Day” (Who thinks up this stuff) “National Bike to Work Day” and since it’s also “National Pizza Party Day” I guess you’ll wear off the calories. There was no mention about “Bike to Home from Work Day”. “National Hamburger Day” and “National Cooler Day” LeRoy Town and County Plant sale on Trigon Park May 28 - 29 “National Water A Flower Day” which is good advice, since most people put out their flowers this weekend. And after you water your plants, sit down and have a drink. It’s “National Mint Julip Day” which I thought would have been on Kentucky Derby Day, but it’s not. Instead, the Indy 500 will be run on May 30. Memorial Day - A day to pause and remember. Last week in May is “Library Week.”
