Enjoy being with friends and family without COVID restrictions. As we move into Summer our recreation program is in full swing and the pool is open for business. On our first day we had 225 swimmers. Because of safety concerns with the Wolcott St. project we have decided not to staff the courts this summer. I have spoken to the Mayor and the courts will remain open but won’t be staffed. We will be running all of our rec. activities at Wildwood Park. Beginning this Saturday there will be a change in how the transfer station operates. Based on the new contract with Casella waste, cardboard, glass and plastic will all be comingled in one dumpster, to be sorted later. There is no need to separate them prior to bringing them to the transfer station. The Town of LeRoy is in the process of refinancing all of our existing water districts in order to take advantage of lower interest rates. What that means to the people who have debt service on their water hook up on their taxes there will be a reduction in their tax bill. The total savings for all the districts is $125,000.00. While on the subject of water, many of you have received the mailing asking for your opinion on a town wide water project. Please fill them out by July 9th so we can determine whether or not to move forward with the project. There was an error on the sheet on cost it is not $700 per month but per year. Sorry if that created any confusion. As many of you have seen and asked about there has been a great deal of activity along Route 19, on both the property owned by the Genesee County Economic Development Committee as well as other properties. Let me clear up some of the rumors. Approximately 50 acres has been purchased by Bio-Works. It is a company that breeds agriculturally beneficial bugs and plants to sell to farmers. They will be starting construction on a 200,000 square foot facility sometime in September. As to the rumors on the rest of the properties along rt.19, Great Lakes Cheese has expressed an interest in a possible $500 million dollar investment to build a cheese factory, that would create 400 jobs. There has been no decision as to whether or not that is going to happen as of the writing of this column. There will be a public hearing on July 8th in the Town Hall at 7:00 pm to discuss the possibility of rezoning some properties along rt. 19 from R2 to industrial . This rezoning would be consistent with LeRoy’s comprehensive plan that was created in 2017. The property in question was never zoned as agricultural even though it has been farmed for many years. Let me be clear on a couple of questions that have been asked. Is this rezone being done for Great Lakes Cheese? The answer is no. Am I in favor of trying to bring industry and jobs to the town of LeRoy? The answer is yes. Has there ever been any discussion of eminent domain? No. As you can see the Town has quite a bit going on right now and I will try to keep you informed on all of the happenings. Enjoy the 4th and I hope to see you around town. Around Town
