LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - AUGUST 29, 2021 by Lynne Belluscio The restored Lent – Klinkbeil pump house is now a part of the Historic LeRoy House. On Sunday afternoon, August 29, at 3 PM, the LeRoy Town Band will perform for an hour in the gardens, and at 4 PM there will be a brief introduction of the Klinkbeil family and the crew that has spent the last several months repairing, restoring and painting this significant architectural treasure. Folks are invited to join us for the concert. A croquet court and quoits will be set up for folks to enjoy. The pump house stood behind Rachel and William Klinkbeil’s house on West Main Street. A few years ago, as their health failed, they discussed with their family what would happen to the pump house when their home was sold. After Rachel’s death, William asked his son Kris to offer the pump house to the Historical Society and the offer was quickly accepted. Mike Lauterborn moved the pump house in the fall of 2020 to his property on Mill Street, and then in May 2021, the pump house was moved again to a new cement pad on the Historical Society property. Gary Fink began restoration soon after it as moved and it was completed in August. The original pump has been replaced by a Gould pump donated by Martha Tabone and it was restored by Pete McQuillen of the Finishing Line. Bruno DeFazio and Jake Williams scraped and painted the pump house, including a new ceiling of pale blue. The pump house was originally adjacent to the Lent Tavern (circa 1812), on West Main Street. It probably was built in the 1850s, and according to one source, it was moved to the Lent property in 1860. The well provided the water for the Lent house until village water became available in the late 1800s. After the pump house was moved, the well was filled and sealed. There is still work to be done and in the coming year, money will be raised to replace the metal roof.
