LeRoy Pennysaver & News
LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - OCTOBER 3, 2021 by Ric Vangalio On Saturday the undefeated (3-0) Junior Knights hoped to keep their unbeaten season going against the Junior Blue Devils of Geneseo at the friendly confines of Hartwood Park. One thing that the past year has taught us is that the new normal is anything but normal. As sports teams from all over are forced to play without key players due to Covid quarantine protocols, The Knights were no exception. Le Roy went into this game without multiple key contributors. The Blue Devils won the toss and chose to defer to the second half, giving the Knights the ball to start the game. That decision would come back to haunt them, as RB Sammy Bogue took a handoff up the middle on the second play of the game and took it all the way for a 55 yard TD run. A QB sneak by QB Carter McClurg for the extra point gave the Knights an early 7-0 lead. The Blue Devils offense took the field hoping to match the Knights success. It took all of one play for them to realize that was not going to be an easy task. Carter McClurg has a reputation around Junior Football for being a dominant defensive player. That reputation became reality on the first defensive play with a big sack of the Geneseo QB. Geneseo quickly found out that Le Roy’s defense is loaded with playmakers. Blake Fetzer, joined the fun plus some when he broke through the line on the next play to tackle both the QB AND the RB for a big loss. Geneseo was introduced to the Le Roy Junior Knights favorite 3 words… Three and out!!! Sammy Bogue then returned the following punt 30 yards to Geneseo’s 15 yard line where the Knights offense took the field to try to do some more damage. And that damage came quickly. After Blake Biracree softened up the middle with some bruising runs, Bogue took a pitch to the outside for another TD. A failed extra point conversion put the score at Le Roy 13 - Geneseo 0. Geneseo’s next possession started with a quick first down. Stone Husted along with John Amico, Owen Nichols and the rest of the defensive crew decided that was more than enough. The drive ended as soon as it began as Mason Doran broke through the line with a big hit, forcing a fumble that Big Ben Biracree was more than happy to jump on to give Le Roy the ball back. Right around then, the clouds opened up with a steady rain fall. Rain drops weren't the only thing falling from the sky however, as Sammy Bogue took a shotgun snap out of the wildcat formation and threw a perfect pass to Ryan Chrissy for a 15 yard TD pass. Blake Fetzer took a handoff up the middle and with some hard running was rewarded with the extra point conversion. Le Roy 20 - Geneseo 0. The Blue Devil’s next possession was again eerily similar to their last one. One play and fumble, as a botched handoff resulted in a fumble that was gobbled up by Mason Doran to put the ball back in the hands of Le Roy’s dangerous offense. Along with rain there tends to be some lightning, but in this case the lightning came in the form of Ryan Chrissy as he raced around the left end Le Roy Junior Football FALL VISITS Drive-Thru Open House Saturday, October 16 • 10 AM - 12:30 PM Academic Open House Saturday, November 13 • 9 AM - 12 PM Virtual Mini Open House Thursday, November 18 • 6 - 7:30 PM Sign-up for a Fall Visit today! www.genesee.edu/VISIT Fall & Winterim Courses Available! A fumbled extra point conversion put the score at Le Roy 26 - Geneseo 0. Le Roy’s defense then did what Le Roy’s defense does best, not give up yards. With swarming tackles led by Logan Corcimiglia, Eonjay Robinson ,Eli Kemp, Connar Hanley and Cam Montesano the Blue Devils were forced into another 3 and out. With Le Roy taking over again, a nice run by Thomas Englerth had the Knights knocking on the door of the Red Zone once again. Unfortunately the slick conditions played a role in back to back fumbles, one that ended the drive two plays later. Geneseo’s offense found a spark in the 3rd Quarter with a long run for a first down. But that spark was quickly extinguished as Ryan Chrissy intercepted a pass, and followed some nice blocks set by Jace Beauchamp and Cam Weber all the way into the endzone for a Touchdown! Eli Kemp attempted the following extra point conversion which was stopped just short of the goal line. That put the score at Le Roy 32 - Geneseo 0 at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter was much of the same by both teams as Andrew Sibley, Nate Conte,AndrewMurphy, Jaiden Biletskiy and the rest of the Le Roy defense refused to let up. Both teams went back and forth until Sammy Bogue broke a late TD run (his third of the game) to make the score. Le Roy 38 - Geneseo 0. The Blue Devils had one more opportunity to score in the fourth quarter but Le Roy defenders Brianna “Stitch” Porcelli, Wyatt Whipple and Dylan Loftus were not going to give up the hard earned shut out at the end of the game. The game ended with a final score of Le Roy Junior Knights 38, Geneseo Junior Blue Devils 0.
