LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - JANUARY 30, 2022 Le Roy Youth Basketball by Ric Vangalio GLOW REGION- 4th GRADE BOYS BASKETBALL: The undefeated 4th Grade boys LeRoy Knights looked to continue their winning ways as they faced the Wheatland-Chili Wildcats on Saturday morning. The Knights have been dominant so far this year, averaging 43.5 points a game while only giving up 14 points a game. This week they would have to figure out a way to do it without a major contributor in Dylan Loftus who is second on the team in scoring, and even more importantly the team leader in assists. The game started out looking like it might be close as the offense got off to a slow start, as the Knights struggled to get used to playing their first game on the road this year. Ryker Vangalio and Carter McClurg each chipped in 4 points as the 1st quarter ended with the 8-4 Knights lead. In the 2nd quarter, the Knights offense started revving up. Thomas Englerth pumped in 4 points of his own and Harrison Porter provided the defensive rebounds to secure a 2nd quarter shutout of the Wildcats. At the end of the first half the score was Le Roy 18 - Wheatland Chili 4. The 3rd quarter was much of the same as Blake Biracree got on the board with 2 points and Andrew Sibley provided some more shut down defense to continue the Wildcats’ scoring drought. The Knights took a commanding 31-4 lead at the end of the period. The Knights finished the game strong in the 4th quarter as Kypton Cone rolled off a beautifully executed high pick to hit a nice open shot in the lane. The defense played great throughout as they held Wheatland-Chili to just 2 points after the 1st quarter. The Knight used a well rounded team effort to win the game 39-6, and keep the undefeated season going. Ryker Vangalio connected on over 60% of his shots to lead the team in scoring with 15 points. Other offensive contributors were Carter McClurg (12 points), Thomas Englerth (6 points), Blake Biracree (2 points), Harrison Porter (2 points), and Kypton Cone (2 points) Next week the undefeated Knights (3-0) travel to York to play the Golden Knights on Jan 29nd at 9=10:30 am. KTA COED BASKETBALL LEAGUE: 3rd/4th Grade League Game #1: Bulls vs Lakers This week’s opening game was a matchup of the Bulls, who were coming off their first loss of the season facing off against the Lakers, who are looking for their first win of the season. The Bulls knew it was going to be a dog fight as they were playing without second leading scorer (8.5 points per game) and team assist leader, Dylan Loftus. But luckily they still had leading scorer Carter McClurg. McClurg led the Bulls with 10 points enroute to a 16-6 Bulls victory. Other offensive contributors were Harrison Porter who added 6 points. For the Lakers, Drew Spink led the team with 4 points and Adalyn Stella added 2 points of her own. The Bulls move to 2-1 while the Lakers drop to 0-3. Game #2: Celtics vs Knicks The Celtics came into this game as the only undefeated team in the league at 2-0. They were facing a Knicks team coming off a big win last week and looking to keep the winning ways going. In order to keep the perfect season going, the Celtics would have to overcome not having team leader Ryker Vangalio and his league best 18 points per game.. The game was close the entire time, with the Celtics taking a 2 point first half lead 14-12. The Knicks came out swinging in the 2nd half and found themselves up by 4 going into the final quarter. In what proved to be the most exciting game this year, the Celtics came roaring back and ended up leading the game late in the 4th quarter. With only 2 seconds left, it looked like the Celtics would keep the perfect season going. But Blake Biracree had other plans, as he hit a buzzer beating 3 pointer to give the Knicks an exciting victory and pull them to a 3 way tie for first place in the league at 2-1. The loss was the Celtics first of the year as they fell to 2-1 on the year. Blake Biracree led the Knicks with 17 points. The Raptors have been a force to be reckoned with this year led by Rookie head coach John Marinaccio and league leading scorer Anthony Hamilton. The combination of the Hamiton brothers and the deep bench of the Raptors proved to be too much for the Blazers as the Raptors moved to 3-0 on the season with a 26-12 victory. With time running out it looked like the Rockets were going to come away with their first win of the season. The Warriors were down by 2 with time running out, when Brayden Johnson was fouled and went to the foul line with no time remaining and a chance to tie the game. Johnson hit both foul shots to end the game in a 18-18 tie. Brayden Johnson led the Warriors with 12 points. Other offensive contributors were Jayce Miller (4 points) and Ella Morrow (2 points).
