LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - FEBRUARY 20, 2022 by Ric Vangalio GLOW REGION - 4th GRADEBOYSBASKETBALL: The 4th Grade Le Roy Boys Knights basketball team has had this matchup circled on the calendar for the past couple of weeks. Both the Knights and the Geneseo Blue Devils entered this game undefeated and knew that this game would probably be the one that decides the regular season GLOW Basketball Championship. Both teams knew this would be a battle and neither team wanted to give in. Geneseo is a well coached team that plays a tough physical style of defense and a disciplined offense that gave the Knights fits to start off. The Knights, who are used to getting out early and staying ahead actually found themselves down at the end of the first quarter. Ryker Vangalio hit two foul shots while Dylan Loftus added a bucket as the Knights found themselves down at the end of the period 4-6. This marked the first time all year the Knights were down at the end of any period. The second period was just as close and just as physical as both teams refused to give in. The Knights fought back in the 2nd quarter and found themselves in more familiar territory as they took an 11-10 lead into halftime. During the halftime break the Knights made some defensive adjustments that they hoped would pay off. Pay off they did, as Blake Biracree, Krypton Cone and Andrew Sibley came up big on defense as Geneseo would only score 2 points in the 3rd period. Carter McClurg helpedwiden the gap as well as he got in on the scoring. At the end of the 3rd the Knights led in a still very tight game 1512. The sign of a good team is how they can handle pressure situations. As the game came down to the end, the Knights never got rattled while the Geneseo team started showing their frustrations. Harrison Porter and Thomas Englerth helped out by combining for 5 rebounds on defense while Loftus and Vangalio took control of the offense. Vangalio and Loftus have been an impressive combination that has worked together very well all season. That combination would be the difference in this game. Vangalio scored 6 points in the final quarter, the last bucket being off a perfectly run high pick and roll with Loftus providing a pin-point pass to set up the score, and the final nail in the coffin for Geneseo. The Knights finished off the Blue Devils and moved on to 6-0 for the season. They attempt to finish the perfect season next weekend against Cal-Mum. Ryker Vangalio completed the game with a double-double as he led the team in points (14) and rebounds (14). Other offensive contributors were Dylan Loftus (7 points) and Carter McClurg (2 points). KTA COED BASKETBALL LEAGUE: 3rd/4th Grade League Game #1: Lakers vs Bulls The first game of the 3rd/4th Grade division was a match-up of the winless Lakers (0-5) vs the top seeded Bulls (4-1). The Lakers were looking for their first win of the season, while the Bulls were looking to lock up the #1 seed in next week's KTA playoffs. The Lakers were without team scoring leader Drew Spink, so they knew they had to bring their A game. Eden Bailey was not going to lay down and give up though as she scored 4 points in the first half to keep the Lakers in the game. The Bulls used a balanced attack of Carter McClurg, Dylan Loftus, Harrison Porter and Brody Wilson on offense to end the 1st half up 10-4. The Lakers were not about to give up, as Addy Stella came out hot as a pistol in the 2nd half. Stella added 8 points in the period as she fought to keep her team in the game. At the end of the 3rd, it looked like the Lakers had a chance as they were within 3 points. Brianna “Stitch” Porcelli had other plans, as she led her Bulls team with 6 points in the 2nd half to help them pull away from the Lakers. Jayden Biletskiy then put an exclamation point on the game with a baseline runner to seal the victory and give the Bulls a win and clinch the #1 seed heading into the playoffs. The final score was Bulls 23 Lakers 16. The Bulls finish the year 5-1 and will play the #4 seed Lakers again next week in the first round of the playoffs as they finish the season 0-6. The Bulls were led by Brianna Porcelli and Carter McClurg with 6 points each. Other offensive contributors were Harrison Porter (4 points), Dylan Lofus (3 points), Brody Wilson (2 points) and Jayden Biletskiy (2 points) The Lakers were led by Addy Stella with 10 points. Other offensive contributors were Eden Bailey (6 points). Game #2: Lakers vs Celtics In the 2nd game the Celtics looked for a little revenge as it was the Knicks that gave them their first loss of the season back in week 3. With the Bulls win in game 1, this game meant very little as far as playoff positioning, but don’t tell that to these two teams. This game had playoff intensity the entire game as the defense of both teams came to play. The Celtics got out to a quick start with a 7-3 1st quarter lead. The Lakers won on a last second buzzer beater in game one, and the Celtics were determined to make sure this one wasn’t close enough to let that happen again. The Celtics are known as one of the deeper teams in the league and they used that depth to not only maintain the lead, but pull away throughout the game. Ryker Vangalio, Cole Cray, Owen Nichols and Paul Winters all found a way to get on the scoreboard in this game. The Knicks definitely were not going to go down without a fight as they used a great team effort of Ben Biracree, Quinton Ianni, Arabella Morsch and Blake Biracree to put points on the board. In the end, it was the Celtics that got their revenge and came away with a 23-13 victory. The Celtics finish the year 4-2 and earned the #2 seed heading into the playoffs. The Celtics will play the Knicks again in the playoffs as they finish the year 3-3 as the #3 seed. Ryker Vangalio led the Celtics in scoring with 13 points. Other offensive contributors were Cole Cray (6 points), Owen Nichols (2 points) and Paul Winters (2 points). Ben Biracree led the Lakers with 7 points. Other offensive contributors were Quinton Ianni (2 points), Arabella Morsch (2 points) and Blake Biracree (2 points). 1st/2nd Grade League Game #1: Blazers vs Raptors The first game of the 1st/2nd Grade league was a showdown of the 4-1 Raptors and the 1-4 Blazers. The Raptors were looking to clinch the #1 seed going into next week’s KTA Basketball playoffs. The Blazers are in the midst of a 3 game losing streak but Coach Kristin Loftus was looking to turn that around. One of the Blazers biggest concerns was keeping guard Anthony... ...Hamilton Le Roy Youth Basketball Apply in person Mon.-Fri. 8:30am-4pm. 8610 Rt. 237, Stafford, NY (Between Rt. 33 and Rt. 5) OR 6905 Ellicott St. Rd., Pavilion, NY (1/8 mi.
