LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - SEPTEMBER 11, 2022 by Lynne Belluscio This beautiful purple barn quilt has been inside the D&R Depot for ten years. It’s known as “Nancy’s Fancy.”Agroup of men, who regularly met at the Depot for breakfast, commissioned this barn quilt in Nancy Nickerson’s favorite colors. The quilt was dedicated to two members of the group who had passed away. Nancy was always at the Depot, every early morning to greet the “Breakfast Club” as they were known. Nancy was ready with a steaming hot pot of coffee and kept everyone’s cup filled. As someone has said, the Depot was a place where everyone knew your name. At the Depot, it was where Nancy knew everyone’s name. And through the years, Nancy made sure that everyone who worked at the Depot had the same approach to folks who came through the front door. The Depot was and still is the “welcome to LeRoy” gateway. Busloads of visitors stop at the D&R. So, it was with great sadness that we all learned of Nancy’s passing, yet we know that her legacy is still at the Depot. There is still a hot cup of coffee, or a cold raspberry tea. And of course, there is the wonderful chicken pot pie, with the flaky pie crust top and “pieces of chicken that you can see!” Nancy brought that recipe with her when she and her husband Don, bought the D&R Depot in 1991. Ashort time later, Sean Valdez and his wife Jennifer joined the Depot team. They helped expand the menu - - always to Nancy’s standards. The food continues today, to be the home cooked, family recipes that make the Depot a welcome place to sit and have a meal. Retirement was never in Nancy’s vocabulary. But work ethic was, and being at work every day, was important. When the pandemic broke, it was very hard on the D& R and the staff, including Nancy, but the restaurant emerged, and Nancy returned to her usual schedule at the age of 90. We’d like to think that Nancy is still showing up every day at the restaurant that she loved. And “Nancy’s Fancy” looks down to make sure everyone receives a smile. Work this winter is being done to update the LeRoy Barnquilt Trail with the cooperation of the Genesee County Office of Tourism, and the story of “Nancy’s Fancy” will certainly be included. A Celebration of Life will be held at the D & R Depot on Sunday September 18th, 2022, from 1:00 to 6:00 PM. All who knew her are invited. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you make memorials to the Jell-O Museum 23 EMain Street LeRoy, NY 14482, or the Woodward Memorial Library 7 Wolcott Street LeRoy, NY 14482. Nancy's Fancy
