LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - NOVEMBER 6, 2022 by Lynne Belluscio This is an article for Betsy Overacker’s “Page Turners” team. I was at the Wolcott Street School recently and ran into Betsy. We had a quick chat and she told me that this year’s Page Turners, would be reading “Amelia and Eleanor Go For a Ride.” The book is based on a true story, when Amelia Earhart visited the First Lady at the White House in 1934. Betsy said to me, “The kids couldn’t believe that both of these famous women had been in LeRoy.” So, I promised Betsy that I’d write about the two famous women in the Pennysaver this week and how it happened that they came to LeRoy. Amelia Earhart was the female pilot who became known as “Lady Lindy”* after she became the first woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean in an airplane on June 17, 1928. That airplane was the “Friendship”, and it was owned by Donald Woodward of LeRoy. Donald’s father was Orator Woodward, who owned Jell-O. Donald built an airport onAsbury Road. That is where he had a fleet of airplanes, including the Friendship. In September 1928, thousands of people came to the airport for the grand opening. There was a huge airshow and the newspaper reported that over 60,000 people came to LeRoy. The story of the big event was in last week’s Pennysaver. However, Amelia Earhart did not come to LeRoy at that time but she did come to LeRoy a couple of months later on January 24, 1929. She was in Rochester and Don Woodward asked her to come to the airport to see the Friendship. He sent someone to drive into Rochester and pick her up and that’s how she came to LeRoy. She signed autographs. In fact, there are photographs of her in LeRoy. One photograph shows her stepping out of the Friendship, and in the plane you can see a chair. That chair is at the LeRoy Historical Society as well as an autographed photograph. It was a cold winter day, and everyone is dressed in their heavy coats. You will notice a little girl in a white coat and hat. She is three-year old Anne Ferguson. Amelia picked her up to have her photograph taken. Anne Ferguson is still alive, and lives in Bozeman, Montana. She says that she remembers that she was told to smile when the photographer took her picture, but she was scared and didn’t smile. After the photographs at the airport, Donald Woodward’s wife, Adelaide, invited everyone to her house at 129 East Main Street for some hot tea and food. Then Amelia went back to Rochester. Several years later, in 1934, Eleanor Roosevelt, the wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, was in Buffalo helping to campaign for Caroline O’Day who was running for election to Congress. AdelaideWoodward was Vice Chairman of the Genesee County Democratic Party, and she invited Mrs. Roosevelt and Caroline O’Day to come to LeRoy to her house. A motorcade was escorted by the New York State Police and the Secret Service. They arrived at the Woodward home on East Main Street which was decorated with red, white, and blue bunting. A group of ladies were gathered inside and it was reported that a thousand people were in the front yard. The First Lady was greeted by the High School Band and the American Legion Drum Corps. On the lawn was a “Democratic Donkey” with a “Rally Day” blanket. Eleanor was presented with a bouquet of roses. Caroline O’Day was a member of a group of four women, including Mrs. Roosevelt, who wrote and edited a monthly p u b l i c a t i o n e n c o u r a g i n g women to vote and she was involved with the League of Women’s Voters. She was elected to Congress and served four terms and advocated for child labor p r o t e c t i o n , e m p l o y m e n t opportunities for the disabled, immigration rights and antilynching legislation. In 1939, O’Day was at the side of the famous African American singer, Marian Anderson when she sang at the Lincoln Memorial after being banned by the Daughters of the American Revolution to sing in Constitution Hall. Eleanor and Caroline O’Day would remain friends until O’Day’s death in 1943. The story of Amelia and Eleanor in the book that the Page Turners are reading, takes place on April 20, 1933, a year before Mrs. Roosevelt was in LeRoy. Amelia and her husband, G.P. Putnam were invited to the White House for dinner and to spend the night. Amelia was in Washington to give a speech the next day. Amelia arranged to take Eleanor for a flight over Washington D.C. She did not fly the plane. It was flown by two pilots for the airplane company. But you will have to read the book to learn all about this adventure. *Lindy is a reference to Charles Lindburgh, who was the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in May 1927. Amelia Earhart and Eleanor Roosevelt Visit LeRoy

LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - NOVEMBER 6, 2022 Submitted by Robert Stiles Dansville NY: The SR Knights (5th & 6th grade) capped an undefeated season by throttling the Hornell Red Raiders 36-8 last Sunday at the new Dansville athletic turf & track facility. The Senior Knights entered the Championship game at an unprecedented 9-0. Included in that record are two forfeit wins from local rivals, GVB and Livonia. GVB opted out at halftime and Livonia refused to play LeRoy at every level including flag football. The 7-1 Red Raiders were not scared to play the SR Knights. The Red Raiders battled better than anyone the CYFL had to offer with their physical rough Raiders play on defense led by #38. The Senior Knights got the ball first and set the pace of the game with a 12 play 62 yard drive. Drew Beachel with his QB1 swagger threw to Matthew McCulley for 12 yards on 4th & 9 to keep the series going. Nutter Stiles hit the edge for 14 yards. Roland Goodenough's 4th down conversion set up Stiles for an easy TD behind Eli Prevost's block. Addison Roth's onside kick is recovered by Brianna Porcelli. Girl power at its finest! Blake Fetzner knows about girl power at his residence. He was in on the chaotic physicality that led to the girl's success. Beachel lasers a 31 yarder to McCulley but for the first time all year the starting offense fails to score. Turn over on downs and Beachel was NOT HAPPY. The stingy Knights defense takes out Hornell behind Jake Kochmanski and Roland Goodenough. Goodenough forces a fumble and recovers it. Knights ball, on the 7 yard line. Nutter Stiles rips a 7 yard TOUCHDOWN behind Jessie Hubbard and Dalton Luke for a 12-0 lead. The knights are in control but in a battle for the first time since Avon in week 5. The SR defense doesn't disappoint with 5th grade rock stars, Andy Murphy and Preston "Rudy" Heschke. On play 2 of this series Kochmanski and Goodenough gang tackle and force a fumble that Jessie Hubbard recovers. KNIGHTS ball! LeRoy losses the ball on play 2 after a tough run by Kochmanski for 11 yards. The Hornell defender strips the ball away and is headed to score. Carson Wetsell, a first year upstart tackles the Hornell player. A heads up play for the big tight end. Hornell trying to break momentum is back on offense. LeRoy has its most improved player in, Jackson Cook may not be big, but he is fierce! Cookie thwarts the offense with Alec Bartze. Another Fumble! Cook recovers! Beachel now is confident and he rips a 24 yarder to Bartz on play #1 of this series to set up LeRoy's Red 2 offense on the 30 yard line. Ryker Vangalio runs a hurry-up offense and smashes his big backs behind Wyatt Whipple, Mikey Warner, Jackson Hubbard, Blake Bearacree and Ethan Rose. Hornell keying on Kochmanski takes the bait! Stiles walks it in behind his two first team All CYFL lineman, Luke Offen and Dalton Luke who both went power side. Hornell tries to score before the half but the Knights defenders are having none of it. Matthew McCulley & Nutter Stiles at defensive ends are funneling everything inside. Jessie Hubbard, Cook, Kochmanski & Goodenough are eating up the Hornell backs, LeRoy up 18-0 at the half. The second half was a bit less tense for the LeRoy Knights. The Knights have a sophisticated substitution plan that develops younger players with protection around them. Hornell does not! The Red Raiders now clearly playing catch up with players who have not played a down in the first half are taking more chances. On 3rd down the Red Raiders try to pass to the right side. Samuel Bogue' steps right in and pick 6! Nobody was catching the speedy Bogue besides his teammate Ryan Crissy who led the convoy to celebrate. LeRoy in control 24-0. Hornell's ball early in the 3rd quarter still has plenty of time left. The Raiders are still subbing manically keep getting bashed by the usual suspects in the interior of the defense. Kochmanski, Bartz, Hubbard, Cook and Goodenough are starting to take over the game. Bartze and Cook thwart a 4th down pass. Knights ball on the Hornell 35. Goodenough nearly exhausted refuses to go down on a 17 yard run. McCulley in motion right, streaks left, and Drew Beachel has his finest throw of the day running left. TOUCHDOWN McCulley! LeRoy In command 30-0! Beachel to McCully with great pass protection from Jace Beachamp and company. The ensuing kickoff is recovered by LeRoy. Addison Roth struggling on her extra points is getting visibly frustrated recovers her own kick along with Kochmanski. The SR Knights trying to "eat clock" is grinding the middle with over 8 minutes left to play. Beachel tired of the grind, zips to McCully for 20 yards and then to Goodenough for another 20. Goodenough having a banner day takes in a 2 yard touchdown behind Hubbard, Prevost and Beachamp. LeRoy up 36-0 Hornell would find the end zone with a 44 yard run from #54. This young man's father passed away just 3 days prior to this contest. A perspective reminder as to what this game is about. Addison Roth would make the very last tackle of the season for a 6 yard loss. A fitting final play to end the season as CYFL CHAMPIONS!
