LeRoy Ambulance Service Updates by LAS Board of Directors LeRoy Ambulance continues to fundraise for a new ambulance, and to date we have raised a total of $28,274. We continue to accept donations, and are planning several fundraisers for 2023 that will be announced at a later date. We have also continued the process of designing our new ambulance and obtaining quotes from multiple vendors, and while many details remain undecided, we do have several details to provide. The new ambulance will be a type III design, which means that it will be a box on a van chassis. The chassis will either be a Ford E Series or Chevrolet G Series, depending on availability/price at the time we place the order. In order to minimize the cost, we will be transferring over the stretcher and most other equipment from our old ambulance instead of purchasing new. The anticipated cost for the new ambulance is currently in the neighborhood of $182,000, but we have been advised that this is likely to increase as costs continue to rise. We are exploring multiple grant and financing options, and will release further information as it becomes available. Lead time on a new ambulance currently varies from 6-18 months depending on options chosen and availability at the time of order. The 2016 Mercedes Sprinter ambulance that this project intends to replace continues to have reliability issues, and recently spent 9 weeks out of service at the dealership due to issues with the diesel exhaust system. It has since been repaired and is back in service, though it just rolled over 100,000 miles this week, meaning that this project is of utmost importance to our continued operation. We would like to sincerely thank everyone who has donated to this effort, your continued support is greatly appreciated and truly helps us to serve the community. We continue to collect donations for this cause, and you can donate at www.leroyems. org, or by mailing a check to LeRoy Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 56 LeRoy NY 14482. Washington, Rabbi Alexander D. Goode, and the Revs. George L. Fox and Clark V. Poling – gave up their life jackets on a sinking Army transport in the North Atlantic so that others might live. Of the 902 soldiers, Navy armed guard, ship’s crew and civilian passengers on board the Dorchester, only 230 survived. They have told us of the chaplains’ efforts to restore calm in a hopeless and chaotic situation, and how they were last seen at the ship’s stern, arms linked in prayer. The survivors’ testimony and the chaplains’ bravery are enshrined at the Chapel of Four Chaplains in the Philadelphia Navy Yard, where the Chapel Memorial Foundation honors acts of selfless service nationwide in memory of the Four Chaplains and crew of USAT Dorchester. LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - JANUARY 29, 2023 by Lynne Belluscio Some of you might have been lucky enough to see Chris Rueby’s working model of LeRoy’s Marion #91 steam shovel. Chris’ model is featured in this month’s edition of “Live Steam.” The article also includes a very detailed history of the 100 ton “Consulship” as the Marion #91 was called. And as most of you know, the steam shovel on Gulf Road is the last remaining Marion #91 left in the world. It was placed on the National Historic Register in 2008. Chris began building his model in 2017. This was no easy task and it required thousands of detailed measurements and photographs. Chris’ model shows the shovel in its final configuration on the day that it was driven out of the quarry by Dominic Stefani in 1949. Dominic had been the chief operator of the machine for fourteen years. Originally these huge machines were equipped with railroad wheels called “trucks.” In fact, that was how the steam shovels were shipped from Ohio. The boom and bucket were placed on a flatbed railroad car, and the main engine was pulled behind. When the shovels were working in the quarries, a crew of men laid track so the shovel could move around the rock face. In 1923, the Marion Company offered conversion kits that would eliminate the railroad trucks and the need for tracks. The conversion kits also included “jackstands” on the side of the shovel as well as a small steam engine mounted behind the boiler that was used to steer the rear tractors. I knew that Chris was working on the model so when the crew from Steamtown National Site in Pennsylvania came to inspect the shovel, I called Chris and told him to come to LeRoy. He was with them the whole time taking pictures and asking questions. I also gave Chris a copy of their report. During the time that Chris was building the 1/16 model of the shovel, he was out to LeRoy often. Chris points out that the shovel was originally wood-framed and at some time it was replaced with metal siding. Chris explains how the four twin-cylinder engines operated the huge machine. In addition to the engine that moved the rear tractors, there were three other engines that worked off the boiler. There was the main hoist engine. The slew engine moved the boom from side to side. The crowd engine, which is located on the main boom, moved the dipper boom in and out. Chris explains in the article that these engines were designed by the Marion Company and were very efficient and made the Marion shovels very powerful! This was important for the shovel that came to LeRoy because it was being used to move stone, not earth. The Marion #91 was usually equipped with a 5 yard bucket, but General Crushed Stone Company who ordered and owned the shovel, had the shovel equipped with a smaller 2 ½ yard bucket. A couple of things that Chris does not mention in his article. The boiler of the shovel on Gulf Road is filled with honeycomb, and at the time the guys from Steamtown inspected it, the hive was filled with live bees. The crowd engine is filled with water because there is no protection from the weather. The huge boom is starting to warp because there is no support under the dipper. Chris does mention that a protective coat of a type of asphalt was applied to the exterior of the shovel in order to protect it and for over 60 years, that coating has helped preserve the shovel. However, the layer of asphalt has started to separate from the surface and water is beginning to collect beneath the surface and that is not good. Another problem that could easily be solved, is that the north side of the machine is open to the weather and the wooden floor is rotting because of the rain and snow that collects through the opening. And there are open seams in the roof that need to be sealed. Hopefully, all of these issues can be remedied in due time. For two years, Chris came out to LeRoy before Christmas and attached Christmas lights to the shovel. Perhaps some of you saw it. Unfortunately, this past year, that wasn’t possible. Age has crept up on all of us. Chris is willing to donate the lights, but we need to find a younger crew to decorate the Marion. Chris has also donated a set of his drawings to the Historian’s office. These drawings will be used for new signage at the site on Gulf Road which will be going up this coming year. And Chris will bring his working model of the Marion #91 back to LeRoy this year and folks will be able to see what an amazingmodel he has built. (A date has not been set yet, but it will be announced in the Pannysaver). We also hope a fund can be started to begin some restoration work on the last Marion 100 ton “Consulship.” Live Steam – Volume 57

LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - JANUARY 29, 2023 Le Roy Youth Basketball by Ric Vangalio GLOW BASKETBALL LE ROY VS. ATTICA (01/07/23): The LeRoy 6th Grade Black team, which actually consists of a mixture of 5th and 4th Grade boys squared off against Attica to open up the 2023 GLOW Basketball season. The Knights knew they would be in for a battle against an older, more experienced and much bigger Attica team. The Knights came out like David against Goliath in the first period. Le Roy used an aggressive offense led by guards Ryker Vangalio and Dylan Loftus, along with added points from Carter McClurg to show Attica they were not to be taken lightly. Le Roy also used a stifling defense in the first period that shocked Attica, who didn’t know what hit them as the Knights jumped out to an early 13-2 lead. As the game went on, Attica’s size proved to be difficult as it gave them multiple opportunities on the offensive boards. Combine that with the Knights going cold in the 2nd and 3rd periods, a game that originally looked like a blowout, turned into a close contest. Late in the 4th, with a slim 2 point lead, Attica turned on the full court press. Taking the ball out under his own basket with less than a minute to play, Blake Biracree hit Dylan Loftus with a long pass which allowed Loftus to connect on a breakaway left handed layup and put the Knights back up by 4 for some much needed wiggle room. Harrison Porter and Kiptyn Cone provided the defense late in the game which allowed the Knights to come away with a 30-28 victory and start the season 1-0. The Knights were led in scoring by Ryker Vangalio who scored 15 points. Also contributing were Dylan Loftus (8 points), Carter McClurg (2 points), Blake Biracree (2 points), Cole Cray (2 points) and Thomas Englerth ( 1 point). The Knights welcome the Pavilion Gophers at home for their next game. GLOWBASKETBALL LE ROY VS. PAVILION (01/14/23): Coming off a win last week vs Attica the Le Roy Knights had another matchup vs a team that towered over them in size. The Knights knew they would be outmatched in the height department inmost games this year, as they play up a grade, but they hoped to make up for it with their speed, ball handling and athleticism. In the beginning the size of Pavilion looked like it was going to be a problem as the Knights struggled to stop the low post scoring of the Gophers. Le Roy countered with a well balanced offense with Dylan Loftus, Kiptyn Cone, Ryker Vangalio, Carter McClurg and Harrison Porter, who all added baskets to put Le Roy on top 15-6 at the end of the first period. Thomas Englerth had decided he had enough of Pavilion’s big men giving the Knights fits, as he used a physical style defense and completely shut down any more scoring coming from inside the lane for the rest of the 2nd period. Englerth also added 4 points in the quarter on offense. Combined with Blake Biracree and Cole Cray adding buckets in the second period, Le Roy already had every member of the team contribute on the offensive side. Le Roy extended their lead to 35-10 at the half. In the 2nd half, the Knight’s defense and speed proved to be too much for Pavilion, as they completely pulled away from the Gophers. Allowing only 4 second half points, and using the fast break to their advantage Le Roy finished off the game in an impressive fashion and came away with a 65-14 victory. The Knights had a complete team victory with everyone contributing on offense. Leading the way was Ryker Vangalio with 26 points. Also contributing were Dylan Loftus with 12 points, Carter McClurg with 8 points, Thomas Englerth with 6 points, Blake Biracree with 5 points, Kiptyn Cone with 4 points and Harrison Porter and Cole Cray with 2 points apiece. The Knights move to 2-0 on the season and face a tough Perry team next. 5TH GRADE GLOW BASKETBALL VS WARSAW (01/07/23): Le Roy’s 5th Grade GLOW team started off the 2023 season on the road vs Warsaw. Going in to this match-up, this was expected to be a close game and it definitely did not disappoint. Both offenses struggled to get going, and tough defense by both teams only made it more difficult to put points on the board. Le Roy’s Drew Spink provided some sparks on offense for the Knights, along with Wyatt Whipple and Quinton Ianni to give the 5th Grade Knights an 8-4 lead after the first half of play. Mason Biggins came up with some big time rebounds and Lucas Miller provided some great hustle and shut down defense in the first half as well. In the second half, Warsaw tried to get back into the ball game but the defense of Le Roy led by Eli Fortuna wasn’t about to let that happen. Andrew Sibley also scored in the 2nd half to help provide a 15-6 victory and start the season 1-0 for the Knights. Le Roy was led in scoring by Drew Spink (8 points). Also contributing on offense was Quinton Ianni (3 points), Wyatt Whipple (2 points) and Andrew Sibley (2 points). Le Roy faces off against Pavilion next week. BOYS 5TH GRADE GLOW BASKETBALL VS PAVILION (01/14/23): The Le Roy 5th Grade boys team started off a little slow in a victory last week, and was hoping to get a little quicker start this week against Pavilion. Both Drew Spink and Benton Biracree made sure that was going to happen as both guards combined for 8 points in the 1st period. Andrew Sibley and Mason Biggins added 2 points apiece as well, as the Knights took a 12-6 lead at the end of the first. Le Roy’s offense went a little cold in the 2nd period but great defensive efforts by Lucas Miller and Wyatt Whipple helped them hold on to a slim 16-11 lead at the end of the half. The 2nd half was a tight ball game the entire way through as the game went back and forth until the 4th period. In the 3rd it was Quinton Ianni and in the 4th it was Eli Fortuna who provided some huge shots for the 5th Grade Knights, which allowed them to hold on for a nail biting 24-22 victory and start the young season 2-0. Drew Spink and Ben Biracree led the Knights in scoring with 8 points a piece. Also contributing on offense was Andrew Sibley, Quinton Ianni, Eli Fortuna and Mason Biggins, all with 2 points of their own. Le Roy 5th Grade takes on Wheatland-Chili next week.
