LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - FEBRUARY 12, 2023 Le Roy Youth Basketball Submitted by Ric Vangalio BOYS 5THGRADE GLOWBASKETBALLVSWHEATLANDCHILI (02/04/23):): The Le Roy 5th Grade Knights team came into this week's game looking to get back into the win column after a close loss to rival Cal-Mum last weekend. This week they faced off against the Wildcats of Wheatland-Chili. The Knights and Wildcats went back and forth in the first period exchanging baskets. Drew Spink and Benton Biracree did the damage for Le Roy as the duo combined for all of the Knights 7 points in the period. Lucas Miller and Andrew Sibley provided the defense, as the two teams finished off the period in a 7-7 deadlock. The 2nd period was dominated by defense on both sides as both teams only combined for 6 points. Wyatt Whipple was a dominant force down low as the Knights only gave up 2 points in the second period to go into the half up 11-9. Last week the Knights had a late rally that came up short. This week Eli Fortuna was determined to make sure it did not have to come to that, as he pumped in 4 second half points and Mason Biggins came up big on defense as the Knights held on and came away with a big 26-23 victory to climb to 3-2 on the season. The Knights were led in scoring by Ben Biracree with 12 points. Other offensive contributors were Drew Spink (10 points) and Eli Fortuna (4 points). The 5th Grade Knights face Attica next week. BOYS 6TH GRADE GLOW BASKETBALL LE ROY VS. WHEATLAND-CHILI (02/04/23): The Le Roy Boys 6th Grade (Black) team knew they were going to be in for a rough weekend as they were forced to play a double header due to an earlier cancellation this year. Not only did they have to play 2 games in one day, but the two games were against two of the top teams in their division. The Knights, who were 3-0 going into the weekend, had to start the gauntlet against a tough Wheatland-Chili team that was 3-1 on the season. The first period looked promising as the Knights defense was playing top notch with the likes of Harrison Porter and Kiptyn Cone who’s help side defense held the Wildcats to just 4 points in the period. Guard Ryker Vangalio provided the offense as he scored all 6 of the Knights points to give Le Roy an early 6-4 lead. The second period saw more great defense by Le Roy as Blake Biracree and Thomas Englerth helped shut down the talented Wheatland-Chili offense. Carter McClurg also got on the board as the Knights went into the half tied at 8-8, in what looked like a total defensive battle. The second half provided a little more offense, but even more drama as the two teams shared back and forth punches like two heavyweight fighters, as no team led by more than 4 points throughout the entirety of the game. Cole Cray helped out the Knights with a bucket of his own coming out of the halftime break, but it was Dylan Loftus who took control for the offense as his 6 third period points led the Knights to a 18-16 lead going into the last period. Neither team wanted to let this game slip away, and it showed as it continued to go back and forth. Le Roy found itself down by 2 points with under a minute to go before Loftus found Thomas Englerth for an open basket to tie it up with 30 seconds to go. Le Roy’s defense held tight for the remainder of the half as these two teams went into overtime to decide the winner with the game tied up 25-25. In overtime it was the Wildcats that would finally pull ahead and hold onto the lead despite a late bucket by Loftus to bring the game within striking range. The Wildcats pulled off the victory and put an end to the Knights undefeated season. The Knights fell to 3-1 on the season with another game scheduled later in the day against the Perry Yellow Jackets. The Knights were led in scoring by Dylan Loftus who scored 11 points. Also contributing were Ryker Vangalio (6 points), Carter McClurg (4 points), Cole Cray (2 points) and Thomas Englerth (2 points). BOYS 6TH GRADE GLOW BASKETBALL LE ROY VS. PERRY (02/04/23): As the saying goes, there is no rest for the weary. Le Roy, who just had their perfect season come to an end earlier in the day at home, had no time to rest as they had to travel to Perry for the second contest of the day. The Knights lost game 1 by a close 2 point margin, and they knew things were not going to get easier as they now had to face off against an undefeated Perry team. Not only did they have to face the top team in the division, but they had to do it without two key players, and losing their second leading scorer 1 minute into the game. Right off from the start the Knights realized that they were in for a long day as the size of the Perry team made an immediate impact on both offense and defense. Le Roy struggled all day with Perry out rebounding them 63-14 throughout the game. The huge advantage on the boards (giving up 43 offensive rebounds for the game) gave the Yellow Jackets 24 second chance points. Carter McClurg and Ryker Vangalio provided all of the Knights offense in the 1st half as they got down big early on and ended the half with their biggest deficit of the year 30-11. Unfortunately the 2nd half was much like the first half as Le Roy could not find an answer to the size advantage of Perry. Harrison Porter was able to get on the board for the Knights in the 2nd half, as was Drew Spink who was pulled up from the 5th Grade team to fill in for a depleted Knights roster, but it wasn't enough as the Knights fell to the Yellow Jackets 55-18. Leading the Knights in scoring was Ryker Vangalio with 11 points. Other offensive contributors were Drew Spink (4 points), Carter McClurg (2 points) and Harrison Porter (1 point). With the two losses on the day the Knights dropped to 3-2 on the season and face off against Attica on February 11th. 8700 Lake Rd. LeRoy, NY 14482 (585) 768-2400 www.falconefuneralhome.com Vern C.
