LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - FEBRUARY 19, 2023 Le Roy Youth Basketball Submitted by Ric Vangalio BOYS 6TH GRADE GLOW BASKETBALL VS ATTICA (02/11/23): The Le Roy 6th Grade Knights were coming off a rough weekend last week as they went into it 3-0 and came out of it 3-2. They were hoping to get back to the winning ways against the Attics Blue Devil’s (Blue team). The Knights who have been routinely outsized in all of their games this year matched up well against an equally undersized Attica team. Attica came into the game at 1-3, but a team like Le Roy that consists of 4th and 5th graders playing in a 6th grade league can't afford to take any team lightly. Especially one that has lost every one of their games by 4 points or less this year, as the Blue Devils have. The game started with Attica coming out hot and getting an early 7-3 lead halfway through the first period. Guards Cole Cray and Ryker Vangalio took control in the second half of the first, as the two combined to score 10 of the Knights 11 points to take an 11-7 lead at the end of the period. In the second period it was more Cray as he pumped in 6 more points in the period to go along with Le Roy’s Dylan Loftus, who put up 5 points of his own. The Knight’s defense stepped up in a big way as Thomas Englerth, Harrison Porter and Kip Cone paved the way for a Le Roy 22-16 lead going into the half. The Knights came out to start the 2nd half much like they finished the first. In the 3rd period alone Loftus added 6 more points, while Carter McClurg got on the board as well. The 3rd ended with Vangalio being fouled on a 3 point attempt at the buzzer. After hitting 2 of the 3 free throws, Le Roy extended their lead to 9 as they went into the 4th with a 32-23 lead. The sign of a good team is balance. So, while Le Roy’s offense sputtered a little in the last period, their defense was able to step in and help out. Blake Biracree led the defense in the closing period as the Knights were able to hold on and come away with a much needed 34-26 win to get back into the winning ways. With the victory the Knights improved their season record to 4-2, with one more game to go. The Knights were led in scoring by 4th Grader Cole Cray with 12 points. Other offensive contributors were Dylan Loftus (11 points, 1 assist), Ryker Vangalio (9 points, 4 assists) and Carter McClurg (2 points). The Knights finish the regular season next week by facing off against the Le Roy true 6th Grade team (Le Roy Red).
