Pomeroy Foundation is based in Syracuse, and through their dedication and efforts, makes it possible for not for profit organizations to apply for grants to erect historic markers. When New York State abandoned their historic marker program decades ago, the Pomeroy Foundation stepped up and not only does it offer markers in New York State, it also offers grants for markers throughout many states. There are some other historic markers that can be included in your search. For example, all of the markers on Trigon Park at the Civil War monument. That includes lists of soldiers who served in the Revolution, the War of 1812, the War of the Rebellion (Civil War), World War 1, World War 2; and the Korean War. The Statue of Liberty (which needs to have it’s plaque put back up) was dedicated to the Boy Scouts by the Order of the Moose. There is a marker for the Keeney Homestead on West Main Road (the house was torn down many years ago). The marker is in storage. The DOT will not allow this marker to be put back on the pole. There are several historic sites that could be included if money could be raised. In no particular order, these might be included: LeRoy Salt Company; Keeney Bean Factory; LeRoy Plow Company; the Civil War Barracks on Church Street; the Woodward House on East Main (that was torn down); the border of the Craigie Tract on West Main Street; the Home of Dorothy Layne, LeRoy’s pioneer black aviator. It’s for sure, that there is a lot of history in this community and it’s great to be able to share it with others. Drive By History
