LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - DECEMBER 03, 2023 by Lynne Belluscio I was working on updating an article that I wrote a few years ago about the first telephones in LeRoy. It was called the “Hello Girls” and included a photo of some women sitting at the switchboards in the Bell Telephone Company office in LeRoy. But as I was putting together the article, I really wanted to include a photo of an old wooden telephone. I thought I would have to use a photo off the internet. Well, as luck would have it, I was walking into the office of the Kelly Ford Company in Perry, and on the wall was a Strongberg Carlson crank wooden phone. I asked Marshal Kelly to tell me about the phone. He told me that his family had the first phone in the area and that the phone was in their house. It was the phone that all the neighbors used until they got phone service to their houses. That got me to thinking about the story I was writing about the phones in LeRoy. LeRoy got phone service in 1882. Alexander Graham Bell received the first patent for a telephone in 1876 and in 1877 the first phone line in the United States ran between Boston and Summerville, Massachusetts. Three years later there were 47,900 phone lines in the United States. By 1882, the telephone switchboard had been invented. So six years after the switchboard was invented and twelve years after Bell receives the patent, there was phone service in LeRoy. In Western New York, there were many independent phone companies that were all in competition with each other. Rochester Telephone was founded in 1899. Frontier, in Buffalo was founded in 1901. Although Bell Telephone first served the LeRoy community in 1901, Milton Wade of Franklinville also wanted to provide service to LeRoy. He offered a subscription that would cost 75 cents per household and $1 for each business. Wade provided services in Batavia, Lockport, Salamanca, Cuba, Akron, and Jamestown. He proposed that his company would erect poles in the back yards when possible. The Bell Company’s proposal was to use the existing poles and would go down East Main Street. The decision was up to the Village Board. Finally in October, the Board reviewed the options. They asked if the Gas and Electric poles could be used. Bell said that the poles were in no shape to be used. The Board didn’t want another set of poles to be erected just for phone service. The Board asked Bell Telephone to reset the poles on East Main Street or to use the lines of LeRoy Hydraulic Company. Bell said that wouldn’t work because the power lines were high tension wires, and it would interfere with the telephone system. (This was before the wires were wrapped.) Then a Board member asked Bell if it was willing to compensate with free telephones at the fire company rooms, one at the Water Commissioner’s office, and two at the pumping stations. The Board noted that Bell offered free phones in Batavia. There was more discussion. Trustee Heaman thought that Bell should pay $1 per pole annual rental. Not all the Trustees were in agreement with Bell’s proposal, and no decision was made at the end of the meeting. Apparently, a decision was made and Bell continued to serve LeRoy. It upgraded its service and made improvements, including the installation of a new switchboard. In the early years, the Bell office in LeRoy was under the direction of Ralph Baker. The rural phone lines in LeRoy extended east to Lime Rock and west to the Stone School in Stafford. Other lines went north to Stone Church and Bergen and south to Pavilion Center (and the Kelly home), Roanoke, Boston Corners, and Linwood. The Bell system in LeRoy was equipped with storage batteries and underground cable conduits on Main Street with a capacity of 800 lines which could directly connect to 22,000 exchanges throughout the country. It was noted that, “It gives the community the opportunity of conversing with practically any point in the United States.” The Gazette mentioned that whenever the silvery tinkle of a bell is heard in a majority of business houses and homes of LeRoy and vicinity, “It’s the ‘Bell.” In 1907, because of all the controversy and disagreements from town to town about telephone service, New York State established the New York State Public Service Commission. Eventually, telephone service became a federal issue and in 1934, Washington established t h e F e d e r a l Commu n i c a t i o n Commission. The telephone system was considered an issue of federal concern for national security and economic success. Wooden telephones were replaced by the “candlestick” telephone which had a mouthpiece and a handheld receiver. When automatic telephone exchanges were introduced, the base of the candlestick also featured a rotary Call Home

In the 1920s the Western Electric candlestick was modified with a cradle and a handset with both a receiver and a transmitter as well as a rotary dial. The push-button electronic “Touch Tone” phone was introduced in the 1960s, but it would be several years before it was commercially available. It was not so long ago when there were “party lines.” It was cheaper to have a party line with several people on the same line than have a private line. When you picked up the phone, someone might be on the line and you would have to wait until the line was free, or you could listen in on the conversation. Conversely, your neighbors could listen in on your conversations. The history of the telephone has to include the cellular (cell) phone which was invented in 1973. The idea of creating low-power broadcast towers was proposed to the Federal Communications Commission five years earlier in 1968 by AT&T and Bell Labs. I can remember when we saw the first cell towers going up and then it seemed like there were cell towers all over to provide wireless service. With that in mind, there are a few places in LeRoy where the cell service is weak and I know that the folks in Wyoming County have had problems. Here’s a few more notes which I picked up off the internet using my cell phone. The American Bell Telephone Company formed the American Telephone subsidiary (AT&T) in 1885. In 1899, AT&T became the parent company after the American Bell Telephone Company sold its assets to its subsidiary. The company was rebranded as AT&T Corp in 1994. Verizon Communications was created on June 30, 2000, by Bell Atlantic Corp and GTE Corp in one of the nation’s largest mergers. The FCC approved the $64.7 billion merger. Spectrum is the trade name of Charter Communications. The brand was introduced in 2014. From 2009 to 2016, Time Warner Cable was an independent company using the name under license from its former parent company. This included “Road Runner” for internet service. I remember the hand crank, wooden telephone at my grandmother’s house in Cincinnatus, New York. She would crank the phone, to call the operator, who she knew. “Would you ring Mrs. Crandall for me? How was Thanksgiving? Was everyone home for the holiday?” FOR ALL OF YOUR BUSINESS NEEDS WE DESIGN AND PRINT: T-SHIRTS MENUS BUSINESS CARDS PLACEMATS MUGS PENS NCR & MORE! 1 Church St., LeRoy, NY 14482 585.768.2201 www.lpgraphics.net 1 Church St. LeRoy, NY 14482 585-768-2201 · office@leroyny.com Your Logo Here Or Here! LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - DECEMBER 03, 2023 by Thom Mangefrida Dear fellow community members, Once again we find ourselves voting on a proposition for an artificial turf field at Hardwood Park. After being voted down 3 times previously. In the mailer Mr. Holly sent out to the community 2 weeks ago, he states that, "science concludes that the use of artificial turf poses no known health risks to children." Yet, Mr. Holly failed to cite a single study or research paper on the subject. Also in the Nov. 12th edition of the Pennysaver he states, "it is unfair to make comparisons between professional athletes and student athletes." So I am going to reference studies about high school athletes with footnotes. So you can judge for yourself. The intent of this is not to scare anyone, but inform them. A 2021 study by Washington University in St. Louis observed that high school athletes across 26 schools were 58% more likely to sustain injuries on artificial turf than on natural grass.*1 A study of 57 high school turf fields across 4 states showed fields had varying levels of infill material. Researchers concluded that high school fields need to have at least 6.0lbs. of infill per square foot. Head trauma, knee and shoulder injury significantly increased when the infill fell below 6.0lbs per square foot.*2 Overtime the amount of infill decreases as a result of it getting kicked up during use and washed away during heavy rains. How often does our district plan on replacing the infill? And at what additional cost? I understand that sectional and state playoffs are played on turf fields. We have no control over this. We do have a say whether or not we play on turf at our facilities. Other questions have not been answered. The districts own timeline states work will begin in the Spring of 2025 and be completed by the Fall of 2026. Does this mean an entire class of Seniors will be unable to play a home game their Senior season? 8.9% of the cost will be offset using the Capital Reserve Fund. This was meant for maintenance and capital upgrades for district facilities. This totals $1,113,912 nearly depleting or reserve. The fund along with State aid could better be spent on things like solar panels or geothermal heating in the schools, which could save tax money in the long run. Env i ronmen t a l and hea l t h concerns are real as well. Artificial turf is just plastic. Plastic degrades in the sun under a process called photo degradation and releases volatile organic compounds or VOC's in off gassing. Think of that new car smell on a hot day. Crumb rubber infill material can contain PFAS or as the EPA has coined them "Forever Chemicals" that will never go away. If you've ever seen rubber infill being laid on a turf field you'll notice workers wearing masks and respirators. And yet the children playing on the field aren't required to wear them. While I believe Mr. Holly does a fine job managing our school district and the board members, who have a thankless job do fantastic work. On this subject we disagree and I believe many members of our community disagree also as evidenced by 3 prior rejections of the proposed turf field. So please everyone go vote on Tuesday, December 5th. Thank you, Thom Mangefrida. *1. Paliobeis, A., Sivasundaram, L., Knapik, D.M., LaBelle, M.W., Olson, M., Karns, M.R., Salta, M.J., & Voos, J.E.
