www.tanys.org Callboard - Volume XVIII • Issue 1 • Spring 2021 Adjudication is one of the many services provided by the Theatre Association of New York State (TANYS). It is one of our most sought after services and unique in its approach to serving non-professional companies throughout New York State. It is our pleasure to travel throughout the state to the home theatres of our member companies, view their work and respond to the theatrical work with a focus on learning and development. Adjudication is an opportunity for your organization to hear constructive, objective feedback about your production. The goal of the provided feedback is the growth of both the organization and individual theatre practitioners. We have our own assessment of how successful we have been in transmitting across the footlights what we wanted our audience to know and feel. We have also become very close to that production and sometimes lose our objectivity or ability to problem solve some of the complex requirements that a script may demand of a director and production team. Adjudication provides an outside eye from an informed colleague that allows our productions not only to bring applause, but also to continue to grow and refine their theatrical work. The adjudication process takes approximately one hour and addresses 10 key areas established by the American Association of Community Theatre. The adjudication is given verbally immediately following the final curtain of the performance, typically at the performance venue of the home theatre. The adjudication team is comprised of individuals from all walks of life with one common passion, theatre! TANYS is always looking to develop and grow the adjudication team. We are looking for qualified individuals with a strong background in education and multiple theatrical domains. Strong communication skills and a willingness to travel are a must. Anyone interested in being considered for our team or having questions about the position should contact Paul Nelson, Vice President of Adjudication Services at paulanelson1979@gmail.com or by calling (716)378-0353. Page 8 Annette Procunier Adjudication Workshop TANYS Seeks Additions To Its Adjudication Team The Theatre Association of New York State (TANYS) takes great pride in all of the services we provide to our member companies, especially the TANYS adjudication program. The year 2020, and even the first part of 2021, has been challenging for all of us personally and professionally - and especially when it comes to our mutual passion, theatre! In order to continue to provide adjudication services to our member companies while adapting to these uncertain times, the TANYS Board has agreed to the following: • TANYS will offer virtual adjudications to our member companies until they are able to open their performance spaces to live audiences. Virtual adjudication will no longer be offered after live audiences can again return in person to enjoy your productions. • Member companies scheduling their first virtual adjudication will receive this service free of charge. • Member companies scheduling additional virtual adjudications (beyond their first) will pay a reduced fee of $50 to the adjudicator. • For a virtual adjudication, you will receive feedback on your performance by either one adjudicator or a team of two adjudicators (as determined by TANYS). • The scheduling and format of the virtual performance and adjudication will be determined by the requesting company representative and the Vice President for Adjudication Services. • Written adjudication feedback will not be part of this service at this time, but will return as an option when theatre goes live again. Please note that TANYS began unofficially providing the virtual adjudication service back in November 2020, and we very much wish to acknowledge and thank our member companies who had their productions adjudicated in November & December 2020 and January 2021. It is our hope that these companies found great value in these feedback sessions - they certainly assisted TANYS in fine tuning our virtual adjudication services. We would like to acknowledge these exceptional member companies: Indian River High School Drama Club, Confetti Stage, and Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop. If you have any questions about adjudications in any format, please contact Paul Nelson, Vice President of Adjudication Services, via email at paulanelson1979@gmail.com or by phone at 716-378-0353. On behalf of the TANYS Board of Trustees, we sincerely wish and hope for your personal health and safety. May we all see each other again soon, and sit together to laugh, learn and grow through the medium of live theatre! 2021 Important Adjudication News
