LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - JULY 1, 2018 game offensively like they had so many times this season, with Drew Strollo getting things started with a run. Strollo walked to lead off the inning, moving over on a single by Adrian Stephens, and eventually scoring on a Holden Sullivan sin- gle. However, A’s hurler Jackson Fix minimized the damage, also striking out the final batter to keep the score 1-0 Orioles after 1. Stephens would retire the A’s in order with 2 Ks in the top of the 2nd inning. Fix would do the same to the Orioles offense, with 3 Ks. The A’s bats got going in the top of the 3rd. Fix singled with one out, and Ryan Shirley followed suit with a single. With two outs, Grady Gil- ligan drew a walk to load the bases. The bases did not stay loaded long, as Hayven Cordes drilled a ground rule double to the left center gap to plate both Fix and Shirley, giving the A’s the 2-1 lead. Not to be undone, the Orioles were ready to strike back in the bottom of the inning. Drew Strollo drew another walk. Adrian Ste- phens singled, followed by a single by Merritt Holly to score Strollo and tie the game. After a walk to Holden Sullivan, Stephens took things into his own hands, stealing home on a passed ball to take the lead 3-2 for the Orioles after 3 in- nings. The 4th inning provided more back and forth action. In the top of the inning, Connor Elmore was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Two quick strikeouts by Stephens made it look like the O’s would re- main unscathed in the inning. Jack- son Fix however had other ideas, singling in the speedy Elmore to tie the game up 3-3. The bottom of the 4th in- ning started out strong for the A’s, as Jackson Fix struck out the first two batters. Donovan Gaillard extended the inning with a walk, followed by Drew Strollo drawing his 3rd walk of the game. After a pitching change, Adrian Stephens would step to the plate. Stephens kept the inning alive with a 2-out single, loading the bases. Big Mer- ritt Holly stepped to the plate, bases loaded, two outs. After two quick strikes, Holly fouled off a couple of pitches to stay alive. His next swing would be immortalized in the annals of LeRoy Little League his- tory. On a 2-2 count, with 2 outs, Holly would blast a no doubt grand slam over the left centerfield fence, giving his O’s a 7-3 lead. The Ori- oles gleefully celebrated the blast at home plate as a packed house looked on. In the top of the 5th, Stephens kept dealing, retiring the side with 2 strikeouts. The Orioles threatened in the bottom of the 5th with singles by Jace Jedrewski and Brady Mc- Clurg, however A’s pitcher Grady Gilligan thwarted the rally with a couple of Ks himself. After a leadoff single by Con- nor Elmore in the top of the 6th, Holden Sullivan took the mound for the Orioles, looking to close out the game. Two quick outs brought the Orioles so very close to their 2nd title in as many years. Jackson Fix delayed the celebration however with a huge single. A walk to Ryan Shirley loaded the bases. Zachary Tooley then delivered with a RBI single, scoring Elmore. With the score now 7-4, the tying run was on first base. Sullivan however dug deep, throwing strikes. A laser line drive to third base looked to tighten the game even more, however Jace Jedrewski snagged the ball, ending the game and securing the Scanlan Cup trophy for the Orioles! Jackson Fix pitched very well for the A’s, going 3 2/3 innings, striking out 10. Grady Gilligan finished the game on the hill, strik- ing out 2 in 1 1/3 innings of work. Offensively Fix had 3 hits, a run and RBI. Ryan Shirley singled and walked three times, scoring a run. Zachary Tooley singled. Hayven Cordes doubled with 2 RBI, and Connor Elmore singled, was HBP, and scored 2 runs. Grady Gilligan walked twice. Adrian Stephens earned the win on the mound in the pitching performance of his life. Stephens went 5 innings, striking out 8. Holden Sullivan closed the game out, pitching 1 inning with 1 K, earning the save. The offensive hero for the Orioles was Merritt Holly. Holly had 2 hits with a run and 5 RBI, highlighted by the game winning grand slam homerun. Ste- phens would step up offensively as well, with 3 hits and 2 runs. Lead- off batter Drew Strollo did exactly what his team needed, pressuring the defense by walking three times and scoring three runs. Jace Je- drewksi and Brady McClurg both singled, and Holden Sullivan added a walk and RBI. Donovan Gaillard drew a critical walk and scored.
