What makes LeRoy and Ber-
genoneofAmerica’sBestCom-
munities? How would you an-
swer that question? Well, we’d
like to hear from you. We have
been asking ourselves the same
question as we prepare our ap-
plication for the next round of
the contest. Sometimes it’s easy
to get mired in what’s wrong,
but we have found that there are
a lotof things that are right about
Bergen andLeRoy.
But we also discovered that
some folks don’t know much
about their community. So ask
yourself, if you were talking to
someone about why you live
here,whatwouldyousay?Iknow
thatwhenwemoved toLeRoy in
1969,wewere interested inbeing
within 30 minutes of Rochester
where we both worked and we
were also near our family. But
we wanted to be in the country
and we didn’t want to be in the
suburbs. We were interested in
a good school system. We were
near 490and theNewYorkState
Thruway. And there were wel-
coming church families.

the Bergen Swamp looking for
rare plants and the illusiveMas-
sasauga rattlesnake.Weasked the
folks inLeRoy during theOatka
Festivalwhat they thought about
our agricultural assets. What
about our retail assets? What
about our commercial assets?
