Superintendent of Schools
It seems impossible that today
is the first day of autumn. We
have enjoyed a beautiful stretch
of perfect weather allowing
for a great week to celebrate
Homecoming. As we march
into October, we have many
exciting events for our students
and families.
On Wednesday, September
30th at 6:30 p.m. in the Trigon
Music room in Wolcott Street
School, we will hold the first of
several “Parent Universities.”
The topic is
Services, Funding,
and Resources for Individuals
withDisabilities
.Theprogram is
free, but registration is required.
Pleasecall768-5502 toregister.
Over thecourseof theyear,we
willhost severalopportunities for
families to learn firsthand about
important topics such as digital
literacy, student motivation,
Google Apps (at home and in
the classroom), common core,
formative and summative as-
sessments, specialeducation, and
much more. We hope that these
willprovide timeandopportunity
for dialogue about the important
issues facingour familiesandour
school. Visit the website,
d click on the
ParentUniversity link toprovide
your input on future sessions.
On October 1st from 1:00–
3:00 p.m. and 3:00–6:00 p.m. is
OpenHouseat theJr.-Sr.High
School
. The goal of this event is
for parents andguardians togain
an understanding of their child’s
scheduleand tomeet their teach-
ers. Please plan on attending!
On Wednesday, October 7th
we will be having our
3rdAn-
nualWalk to School Day
. This
event raises the awareness of the
benefits of walking, and how as
acommunity,wecansupportour
studentseachdayas they travel to
and from school. Wolcott Street
students are invited to meet at
the Knights of Columbus Hall
on Main Street (behind Save
A-Lot) at
8:15a.m. onWednes-
day,October7th
.After a snack,
welcomeandsafety remindersby
our local police,wewill allwalk
together to the school. We hope
you can join us.
October 8th and9th, theLeRoy
taffwillengage inaprofessional
development institute entitled,
“Inspire, Innovate, and Imple-
ment!”
Over the course of two
days, staff will focus on the role
that curriculum, instruction, and
assessment play in improving
both student achievement and
instructional expertise. We will
open the institute with an inspi-
rational message fromMr. Greg
Ahlquist,2013NYTeacherof the
Year. Mr.Ahlquistwillchallenge
all to take the leadership initiative
toensure that
ALL
studentswork
to the highest potential.We look
forward to this opportunity for
teachers to learn from eachother
andexperts in thefield. It should
be awonderful two days.
On final note, we continue to
wait for approval for ourR.I.T.E.
Project from the NY State Edu-
cation Department. You may be
hearing some concerns about the
removalof thebeech tree in front
of the elementary school.
This
is not happening
. The district
had this tree treated in the spring
to ensure its ongoing health. A
major part of theR.I.T.E. Project
is to improve safety for pedestri-
ans and the traffic flow behind
the Wolcott Street School. As
we explore several options, the
locationof theplayground in the
back of the school has proven
to be problematic. Moving the
playground is the best and safest
solution. There are several sites
under consideration for this
relocation. Before any decision
is made, there will be careful
consideration to ensure the re-
location is logical for student
and community use, does not
harm the environment, is in a
safe location, and isaesthetically
pleasing. Aplan tocutdown the
tree has never been, and never
would be, considered.
Lots going on, so be sure to
